<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>The paper is the result of a sociolinguistic research that the authors have realized in the South Slovakia in order to answer three questions concerning (1) the relation between the Slovaks and the Hungarians in this territory with regard to their languages, (2) the potential problems in connection with the language law and (3) the real influence of the politicians upon the coexistence of the Slovaks and the Hungarians with respect to the language tolerance. The motive of the research was the question whether there is any need to regulate the using of the Slovak language by a special law. The paper is a contribution to a systematic mapping of the linguistic situation in the territory of the South Slovakia in order to acquire reliable information that can be useful for the political decisions. The authors start from the thesis that the natural coexistence of the Slovaks and the Hungarians is the optimal modus of accomplishing the desired state and they challenge the role of the language law in the natural coexistence of the population in this territory.</p></abstract>
