<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p><italic>Festucetum vaginatae</italic> Rapaics ex Soó 1929 em. Borhidi 1996 is a characteristic association of the calcareous sandy areas of the Pannonian basin; its dominant grass species is <italic>Festuca vaginata</italic>. Another typical species of these sandy areas is the newly discovered <italic>F. pseudovaginata</italic>. The question is whether <italic>F. pseudovaginata</italic> forms an independent coenotaxa? Our study proved that <italic>F. vaginata</italic> and <italic>F. pseudovaginata</italic> populations grow separately and compose different associations. Stands dominated by <italic>F. pseudovaginata</italic> had a higher species richness and harboured twice as many <italic>Festuco-Brometea</italic> species compared to the <italic>Festucetum vaginatae</italic> stands. Diagnostic species of the <italic>Festucetum pseudovaginatae</italic> association are <italic>Festuca pseudovaginata, Colchicum arenarium, Ephedra distachya</italic>, <italic>Koeleria majoriflora,</italic> and <italic>Astragalus onobrychis</italic>. The number of species, the density of the individuals, and the variability and diversity of the vegetation separated it from the <italic>Festucetum vaginatae</italic> association; thus, it can be considered an independent endemic association. <italic>Festucetum pseudovaginatae</italic> has its own differentiating and dominant species: <italic>Carex stenophylla</italic>, <italic>Cynodon dactylon</italic>, <italic>Eryngium campestre</italic>, <italic>Kochia laniflora</italic>.</p></abstract>
