From a consideration of the gas law, the vapor pressure of nicotine, and the volume of gas required to smoke a cigarette, about 1. 0/o of the added nicotine should be transferred from a filter by the smoke of one cigarette. Since about 25 % is transferred, the rate at which the processes occur must be as important in influencing transfer as equilibrium properties, such as vapor pressure of the transferring component.
