<p><italic>Staphylococcus aureus</italic> is a Gram-positive bacterium, which can cause serious bacterial infections in humans. It constitutes an important etiological factor of many diseases, for instance, soft tissue and skin infections (including skin boils and abscesses), as well as life-threatening necrotizing pneumonia or toxic shock syndrome. It is estimated that about 25–30% of people are carriers of <italic>S. aureus</italic> mainly in the anterior nostrils. A smaller percentage of people are carriers of methicillin-resistant <italic>S. aureus</italic> (MRSA). In accordance with its definition, methicillin-resistant <italic>S. aureus</italic> is resistant to almost all β-lactam antibiotics. This phenomenon is mainly caused by the presence of penicillin-binding protein in the cell wall – PBP2a, which is the product of the <italic>mecA</italic> gene, which is part of the complex called SCCmec (staphylococcal cassette chromosome <italic>mec</italic>). Methicillin-resistant <italic>S. aureus</italic> (MRSA) results in endemic in hospitals around the world and are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in society. Infections initiated by hospital strains of MRSA (health care-associated MRSA, HA-MRSA) concern mainly immunocompromised patients after surgery. In addition, there are populations of acommunity-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) strains and populations of livestock-associated MRSA (LA-MRSA) strains. The treatment of infections with MRSA etiology, after exhausting the possibilities of standard antibiotic therapy with the use of i.e. vancomycin, is based on treatment with new-generation antibiotics, such as dalbavacin.</p>

<p>Gronkowiec złocisty (<italic>Staphylococcus aureus</italic>) jest Gram-dodatnią bakterią, mogącą powodować poważne zakażenia bakteryjne u ludzi. Stanowi ona ważny czynnik etiologiczny wielu chorób, do których należą m.in. zakażenia tkanek miękkich i skóry (m.in. czyraki i ropnie skóry), a także zagrażające życiu martwicze zapalenie płuc, czy zespół wstrząsu toksycznego. Szacuje się, że około 25–30% osób jest nosicielami gronkowca złocistego, głównie w obrębie nozdrzy przednich. Mniejszy odsetek populacji stanowią nosiciele gronkowca złocistego opornego na metycylinę (methicillin-resistant <italic>S. aureus</italic>, MRSA). Szczepy MRSA zgodnie z definicją wykazują brak wrażliwości na niemal wszystkie antybiotyki β-laktamowe. Zjawisko to jest spowodowane obecnością w ścianie komórkowej białka wiążącego penicylinę 2a (penicillin binding protein 2a, PBP2a), będącego produktem genu <italic>mecA</italic>, wchodzącego w skład kompleksu noszącego nazwę SCCmec (staphylococcal cassette chromosome <italic>mec</italic>). Oporne na metycylinę szczepy gronkowca złocistego (methicillin-resistant <italic>S. aureus</italic> – MRSA) powodują endemię w szpitalach na świecie i są jedną z głównych przyczyn zachorowań i śmiertelności w społeczeństwie. Infekcje wywołane przez szpitalne szczepy MRSA (health care-associated MRSA, HA-MRSA) dotyczą głównie chorych z obniżoną odpornością i po zabiegach chirurgicznych. Ponadto wyróżnia się populacje pozaszpitalnych szczepów MRSA (acommunity-associated MRSA, CA-MRSA) oraz populacje odzwierzęcych szczepów MRSA (livestock-associated MRSA, LA-MRSA). Leczenie zakażeń o etiologii MRSA, po wyczerpaniu możliwości standardowych antybiotykoterapii z zastosowaniem m.in. wankomycyny, opiera się na leczeniu antybiotykami nowych generacji, takich jak m.in. dalbawacyna.</p>
