HoST- Journal of History of Science and Technology is an open access journal, available online, devoted to the History of Science, Technology and Medicine. It explores the cultural, social and political dimensions of science, technology, and medicine (STM) in history across the world. Since 2019 HoST is published twice a year (June and December).
Originated from efforts to develop the Portuguese community of historians of science, technology and medicine, HoST is entirely committed to original research on the cultural and social dimensions of science and technology in history across the globe. In effect, a major goal is to make the global geography of HoST papers a distinctive feature of the journal. The constitution of the advisory board reflects the importance of having an active collaboration from different regions of the planet and distinguishes HoST from most of the journals in the field.
Each issue typically includes a thematic dossier, varia and work in progress sections, and three book reviews. Even if based on thematic issues, this journal also accepts and encourages spontaneous submissions, especially from graduate students (work in progress section). In order to promote the exchange between the local research community and noted international scholars, HoST and CIUHCT organize an annual distinguished lecture, which is published in the journal.
HoST- Journal of History of Science and Technology is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal.

Manuscript Submission
Submission of a manuscript implies assurance: that you are submitting your original work, that you have the rights in the work, that the content has not been previously published in form or in substance, that the manuscript itself has not already been published elsewhere and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institution where the work has been carried out, and that you have obtained and can supply all necessary permissions for the reproduction of any copyright works not owned by you. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.
Please refer to the Guidelines for Authors for more detailed information. Please read the guidelines before you prepare your submission. Be aware that submissions not conforming to these guidelines may be returned to authors for correction.
Disclosure and conflicts of interest: All authors must declare any financial or other substantial conflicts of interest that could be assumed to have an effect on the results or their interpretation in the manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed. For other ethical issues please consult the document “Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement” on HoST’s website.
Permissions
It is the author’s responsibility to secure any necessary permissions for publication.
Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to get permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.
Peer Review Process
The Editors of HoST seek advice from experts to revise the submitted papers in the areas of History of Science, Technology and Medicine. All research papers and review articles are analyzed by two independent reviewers (following a double-blind peer review - i.e. the reviewer doesn't know the identity of the author, and vice-versa, throughout the review process). In the case of relevant differences between the evaluations of the two independent reviewers, HoST editors will consult a third reviewer
Authors may propose a list of potential peer-reviewers for their manuscript. Nevertheless, this will be seen as nothing more than a suggestion, and the ultimate selection of the reviewers is the Editor's sole decision. Authors may also indicate experts in the area of their manuscript with whom they have potential conflicts of interest and that, in consequence, should not be considered for the peer-review of their manuscript.
A submission may be declined by the Chief-Editor without review, if deemed inappropriate for reasons other than scientific merit. Please note that manuscripts that do not conform to the general criteria for publication will be returned immediately without detailed review.
The average review time between submission and acceptance is 6-8 months, while the median time between acceptance and publication is 4-6 months.
Article Processing Charge (APC)
The journal does not have any submission charges or article processing charges (APCs).
