Use of Transformer Multi-Level Inverters in Parallel Operation of Marine Generating Sets with PMSG

Abstrakt

Abstract

The increase of energy efficiency in autonomous marine generating sets improves the overall efficiency of the ship’s propulsion. One of the methods to increase the efficiency of generating sets is the use of synchronous machines with permanent magnets in sets as generators (PMSG). The use of PMSG in connected with the need to install power converters in order to maintain constant parameters of the supply voltage and the possibility of reactive power’s distribution between generating sets that work in parallel. The article presents the possibility of using transformer multi-level inverters in parallel operation of marine generating sets with PMSG. On the basis of the results of simulation tests, the theoretical assumptions for the possibilities of active and passive power adjustment in the parallel operation of generating sets were confirmed.

Spreading of Cracks Due to Thermal Fatigue in Metal Molds

Abstrakt

Abstract

The article deals with the formation and spread of cracks from thermal fatigue in metallic forms. For a detailed examination of the problem, it is necessary to describe the thermal side of the process and the mechanism of mechanical stressing of the material. For the heating of the material is valid where the thermal diffusivity of the material is exercised by the decision method. The stress of the material by heating from the die casting metal depends mainly on the physical properties of the material when the calculated stress does not exceed the yield point. Also, with the help of dislocations write the life to the origin of the cracks in the cycles eventually the share of this lifetime on the total lifetime in dependence on the mechanical and physical properties of the material. During operation tests the occurrence of the cracks on the mold surface was initiated by the inclusion or concentration of stress in the knurling effect of fine grooves after grinding. Other cracks occurred in the undersurface layer and their direction was statistically accidental.

Problems of Friction Force Measurement between Cylindrical Outdoor and Internal Slide Parts

Abstrakt

Abstract

The article presents the determination of an exemplary measure in the assessment of the technical state of sets of mechanical objects at the stage of manufacture, use and maintenance. The technical state of the assemblies is influenced by the quality of the friction-cooperating elements, the quality of basic functions, the surroundings and the diameter clearance of kinematic node components. Energy wasted to overcome the frictional resistance is a significant part of the energy supplied, which is why current friction losses are minimized. The article includes analysis of the phenomena occurring in the cylindrical pairs in the presence of static and kinetic friction. The many factors affecting the course and values of friction force between cylindrical elements performing relative reciprocating motion have been indicated. The subject of the article is the method of measuring the friction force between a fixed and movable cylindrical element of the mechanical object. The gradual increase of the friction force component takes place by means of easily accessible force. The results of experimental tests of the friction force in different laboratory conditions under are also included. The effect on the measured friction force was investigated: of friction elements geometry and the surface condition after manufacture and/or operation. Scatter results of static friction force depending on the geometry and surface state can be significant. Examples of surface state images are shown. A friction force model was also developed depending on factors affecting its value.

Sensor signal was obtained with oscilloscope in order to further process it digitally and determine possibility of the damage to the element based on registered acoustic signal.

Analysis of Corners Milling of Aluminum Alloy Elements

Abstrakt

Abstract

The article presents comparative research on the effects of milling of concave corners of elements made of aluminum alloy 7075. The work focuses on the study of the impact of changes in technological parameters and types of machining on the obtained geometrical state of the machined samples. Correct milling of the corners requires selection of the appropriate feed rate and the proper engagement angle of the milling cutter. At the corners, tool engagement angle increases, which significantly hinders the execution of stable machining and adversely affects the geometric and qualitative characteristics of the surface in the corners. Study with application of various strategies and technological parameters of milling corners with variable opening angles were carried out. The main parameters of surface roughness of the machined elements were examined. When analyzing the results obtained, conclusions were formulated indicating the relationship between the change of selected technological parameters, with the assumed type of treatment, and the obtained quality parameters of the samples made.

Influence of Pressure Equalisation Elements on the Quality of Insulating Glass Units

Abstrakt

Abstract

Continuous increase of expectations concerning improvement in quality of building partitions by means of increasing their thermal insulation properties brings, among others, a need of modification in standards that have been applied to the double glazed windows so far. Triple-glazed and quadruple-glazed IGUs are used more and more often. Such elements have better thermal properties, but they are more prone to deflection and stress resulting from climatic load, i.e. changes in temperature, atmospheric pressure and wind load. Due to the above certain concepts occurred that consist in equalising gas pressure in the gas-filled gaps with the atmospheric pressure. The article contains assessment of such solutions in the context of providing suitable technical parameters of glass panes: thermal insulation and susceptibility to climatic load. It was stated that the pressure-equalizing elements (capillaries) can result in a significant reduction in the quality of the glass partition in the event of the argon purging chamber or damage to the low-E emissions. The lower risk of using required thermal properties occurs when periodically active valves are used, they operate only in case of extreme pressure level differences. Further analysis concerned the idea of pressure equalisation between the gaps of a triple-glazed unit, as that can be done by using an edge spacer of appropriate design. On the basis of comparative analysis of static values it was shown that it is a reasonable solution. Such a unit maintains the properties of a tight unit, while the possibility of gas exchange between the gaps leads to relief of the central glass pane in the unit, thus allowing for decreasing its thickness to 2 mm.

Improvement of the Production Process in the Industry 4.0 Context

Abstrakt

Abstract

Dynamically changing conditions of business activity, rapid development of new technologies, increasing intensity of competition, progressing globalisation pose for entrepreneurs new, much more difficult principles than before, especially due to the increase of intensity and complexity of the environment. It is reflected in the necessity of continuous improvement of processes and their quick reorganisation. The aim of the article is to present research conducted in metallurgical enterprise. In the article individual stages of heat treatment process, taking into consideration complications, errors and quality defects of the product arising at the stage of manufacturing the product were described. In order to minimize resulting defects, quality improvement system was implemented, using, among others Ishikawa diagram. In view of the fact that the world stands on the threshold of next industrial revolution, directions of improvement of heat treatment process in the context of Industry 4.0 were indicated.

Design and Modeling of an Experimental Hydraulic Device

Abstrakt

Abstract

The design of the experimental laboratory device is based on the construction of the hydraulic circuits of mobile devices. It is possible to ensure the repeatability of the flow characteristic measurements at the laboratory. This means that in the operating test it is possible to verify the flow characteristics of the hydraulic pump and these results are not affected by the change in the physical properties of the applied liquid. By comparing of the flow characteristics directly on the work equipment (mini-excavator, etc.), the disadvantage is the need for dismantling the hydraulic pump and its mounting on the laboratory device. In some working device removal is not possible, where dismantling is structurally difficult or is time consuming, which increases the cost of their operation.The proposed experimental laboratory device serves to verify the flow characteristics of the hydraulic pump and is also designed to be universal, to test external gear hydraulic pump and hydraulic pump with inclined plate.

Design of Grinding Machine Spindle

Abstract

When grinding high demands are usually placed on the geometrical tolerances of the workpiece surface. For this reason, the spindles of the grinding machines are normally designed with requirements for a minimum position change of the grinding disks due to external forces and bending moments. The design theory of these spindles is relatively well elaborated, as it represents the most frequently used solution in practice. However, there are also cases where it is necessary to grind some hard-to-reach areas, using a great ejection of the spindle. In these cases, it is necessary to reassess the required geometrical tolerances with regard to its necessity to comply with the minimal changes in the position of the grinding discs due to the great ejection. Where it is necessary to maintain high geometrical tolerances, it is necessary to ensure a greater rigidity of the spindle. This rigidity is usually improved by increasing its diameter. By doing this we also increase the weight of the spindle that is heavily ejected, and thus its deformation can occur due to gravity forces. That is why it is necessary to analyse the deflection of the spindle depending on its ejection in the course of its design. In the case we increase the diameter of the grinder spindle the possible applicable grinding disc diameter decreases, due to the growing size of its housing. Any grinding of hard-to-reach surfaces is therefore done in particular to improve the quality of the surface with low requirements on the geometrical tolerances. This article deals with the design patterns for a spindle used in axial grinding for inner rotating surfaces. The article contains a spindle design solution and an analysis of its deflections, depending on its ejection, and the size of the passive forces.

Abstract

In the paper we address the challenge of applying process mining techniques for discovering models of underground mining operations based on a sensor data. The paper presents practical approach of creation an event log based on industrial sensors data gathered in an underground mine monitoring systems. The proposed approach enables to generate event logs at different generalization levels based on several numbers of discovered stages of devices performance. For discovering process stages data mining techniques such as exploratory data analysis, clustering and classification have been applied. Created event log has been used in one of the process mining tasks - process model discovery.

Quality Control in Aerosol Production

Abstract

Aerosol products are present in different industries including cosmetic, technical, household and many more. These products are subject to number of controls both at the pre-production, in-process and post-production stages. Controls at the pre-production stage relate to checking the conformity of individual components that make up the aerosol packaging, as well as raw materials that are used to create the formula. The checks carried out during the production process are mainly focused on the verification of parameters at particular stages of production. Whereas, post-production checks are related to the evaluation of the finished product. Due to the highest share of metal packaging in the aerosol products market, such products are the subject of this article.

Analysis of Device Failure in the Mechanical Production Plant

Abstract

The article evaluates the failure rate of devices in the Mechanical Processing Plant using a traditional quality tool, the Pareto-Lorenzo diagram. A comparative analysis of failure rates was performed, recorded in repair, inspection and maintenance card. Then, changes were proposed in order to reduce failure rates and earlier detection of equipment malfunctions. In order to analyze the failure rate of grain washer equipment during thick coal preparation process, one quality management tools was used - the Pareto-Lorenzo diagram. In this case, it is important to assess the mechanical failure of devices, and demonstrating which devices generate most repairs. Based on materials made available by the mine, such as: Repair, inspection and maintenance cards, Device cards, DTR documentation. Quantitative and qualitative assessment the most frequently occurring mechanical failures during operation of devices in process enrichment of coarse sizes was carried out. An attempt was made to assess failure rate of devices on a grain washer. A comparative analysis of failure rates in 2015-2017 recorded in the repair, inspection and maintenance card was carried out. Then, changes were proposed to stand, in order reduce failure rates, and earlier detection equipment malfunctions.

Influence of Constructional and Kinematic Parameters of the New Solution of Roadheader Mining Head on the Effectiveness of its Work

Abstract

The paper presents a new solution of a mining head for roadheader designed for hard and very hard rock mining. The mining head was equipped with mini disk tools with a complex trajectory. The results of field tests were presented, under which the effectiveness of the new mining head solution was observed. The load and vibrations of the mining head, dustiness and grain size of the excavated material as well as disk tool wear were measured. These tests were carried out for various constructional and material parameters of the used asymmetrical mini disk tools and kinematic parameters of the mining head.

Literature Research in the Field of Technology Assessment Using a Tool of a Systematic Literature Review

Abstrakt

Abstract

The article presents the results of literature research in the field of Technology Assessment (TA). In particular, the attention was focused on searching for trends determining the directions of development of this research area. Research gaps constituting the basis for undertaking new cognitive challenges were identified. As a research method, a systematic review of literature was adopted, the methodology of which was described in the first part of the article. The analysis includes a total of 1788 TA-related scientific articles available in Google Scholar and BazTech databases. The practical part of the article presents fragments of literature research and an attempt to define the concepts of Technology Assessment on their basis. The collected research material showed a high degree of variation in the scope of definitions and the research area covered by TA. This indicates the need to conduct further research in this area for the purpose of clarifying the research area which TA deals with. It is legitimate to say that the development of research in this area is necessary due to the increasing impact of technology on society.

Measurement of Forces During the Extraction Process

Abstrakt

Abstract

The article briefly describes the factors affecting the workability of coal seams. Next, the construction and principle of operation of a globally unique device for determining the values of forces involved in the cutting process (coal extraction) named POU-BW/01-WAP by the author were presented. It is the only device in the world that determines two of the three component forces that are involved in the cutting process. To this end, two independent measuring blocks were used, which consist of tensometric force sensors: cutting (Fs) and pick downforce (Fd). To register these forces, a real pick was used, which is used in longwall drum shearers - a conical pick. The device has ATEX certification that allows working in real conditions, as a device intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres - in accordance with Directive 94/9/EC. The instrument has received many awards at global inventiveness and innovative solution trade shows.

Analysis of Weldings’ Incompatibility in Constructions

Abstrakt

Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of the causes and consequences of nonconformity that has been made in the welding of structural elements. The most frequent incompatibilities in this process were identified and RPN determined for them. The implementation of corrective and preventive actions in the identified critical areas was suggested based on the conducted analysis. After the implementation of corrective actions the re-calculation of the value of the RPN has been made. The paper presents the importance of visual inspection in the process of supervising finished products from the construction welding process. Elements of selected processes carried out in welded structures over two months were analyzed.

Monitoring the Quality of Laser Cutting

Abstract

In engineering industry the production of components begins with separation of the base material and this technological operation can be time consuming, especially in large-scale production. Such production can be made more efficient by means of laser technology focusing on material cutting. Efficiency of cutting is determined not only by shortening of working time or energy saving, but also by the required cutting quality. In the paper we compare the impact of cutting speed changing and laser beam performance on the cutting edge quality. Based on requirements of dimensional accuracy and preset roughness of the cutting edge, we evaluated the cutting quality of laser in samples of different materials. Measured values of sample dimensions and roughness are compared in conclusions of the paper, where we estimate whether the samples meet specified requirements of dimensional accuracy and roughness of the cutting edge in order to make the production process more efficient.

Analysis of the Impact of Unscheduled Downtimes on their Availability in Machine Operations

Abstract

Unscheduled downtimes in machine operation are one of the main reasons behind their low availability. Such downtimes are caused by miscellaneous factors and remain difficult to identify in a number of cases. This particularly refers to enterprises that conduct their activities in changing external conditions, such as hard coal mines, where exploitation is carried out in extremely complicated, changeable and dangerous conditions. The process of coal production makes use of various machines that must be adapted to these conditions. The specificity of the working environment makes it necessary for these machines to exhibit high reliability, readiness and efficiency. These features, in turn, make the cost of the machines very high. It is therefore reasonable to make the best use of their capabilities, which translates into the effectiveness of the entire production process. The article concentrates on determining the availability of these machines. It has been assumed that availability is one of the fundamental parameters that define the effective utilisation of machines. The tests were conducted for a longwall shearer as well as an armoured face conveyor and a main haulage conveyor in one of the hard coal mines in Poland. Industrial automation systems were used to determine unscheduled downtimes in the operation of these machines, as well as their time structure and causes. The results obtained indicate that the number of unscheduled downtimes represents a serious problem in mining exploitation.

Laboratory Tests of a Speed Control System for Roadheader Cutting Heads

Abstract

The paper presents selected results of the laboratory tests of the speed control system for the R-130 roadheader with an inverter-fed cutting heads drive. The results recorded for the variable speed system have been compared with the measurement obtained for the network supplied drive. There have been noticed some oscillations after rapid current overloads. They are due to the operation of the internal current controller of the PWM-inverter, The oscillations are fast decaying - so they prove the results of initial system stability checking. Generally, the automatic speed control, tracking the optimum speed level calculating by supervisory speed adjuster makes possible to better utilize the motor power throughout the whole cutting time. The better operating conditions of the motor cause increase in the whole system power efficiency (even in spite of additional losses in the inverter circuit) Additionally the sped control reduces dynamical overloads. This fact can have a positive influence on the whole system reliability. The speed control subsystem is a part of the whole control system which contains also close-loop boom angular position and velocity control circuits.

A Comparative Analysis of the Impact of CNC Miller Programming on Machining Effects

Abstract

This paper presents a comparison of the impact of the programming methods of a CNC miller on the machining effects. As a part of the study, the test samples were made of the EN AW-2024 aluminium alloy. The CNC machining programs compared were developed with two programming methods: by inputting the CNC machining program directly from the CNC miller's control panel (machine level programming) and in a CAM software environment (CAM programming). The machining effect indicators adopted included: machining time, surface quality, and dimensional deviation of specific geometrical features. A measurement of the machining times revealed than the CAM programming reduced the machining time up to 20% from the machining time of the machine level programming. A conclusion stands valid that CNC machining programs developed in the CAM software environment are more efficient than CNC programming directly with the CNC miller control panel, most likely due to the machining path optimisation in CAM. In addition, given the experimental test results, it was found that smaller machined errors were also obtained for CAM programming. To conclude, the comparative analysis revealed that CAM programming provided better machining results than the machine level programming.

Carbide Milling Cutter Blades Durability during Machining of AL-SI Casting Alloy

Abstract

The paper presents results of wear measurements of carbide shank milling cutters during machining of AlSi10Mg casting alloy. The comparison was made between blades wear of milling cutters without protective coating, with TiB2 coating, and with TiAlCN coating. All cutters had identical geometry dedicated to milling of materials of ISO N group. To assess blades wear degree, measurement of two direct indicators, i.e. VBC and VBBmax, and one indirect indicator, i.e. machined surfaces roughness, were used. Received results allowed to determine usefulness of using selected protective coatings in machining of aluminium alloys, especially Al-Si casting alloys.

Assessment of the Range of Danger Zones Determined in a Function of LNG Chemical Composition

Abstract

Nowadays, when we try to automatize all activities, there is a growing demand for energy in all forms. Increasingly we reach for new energy sources that can be problematic to store or to transport, owing to their toxicity or explosive propensity. The article examines the issues of determining danger zones occurring as a result of liquefied natural gas (LNG) release. The range of danger zones caused through LNG release depends on a multitude of factors. The basic parameter that needs to be considered is a type of the released substance as well as the manner of its release. The range of a danger zone is determined by, inter alia, the concentration of a released substance and the atmospheric conditions existing at the time when depressurization occurs. The article analyses the problem of the range of danger zones in a function of wind speed and surface roughness with a defined value of Pasquill stability for various LNG types, starting with pure methane, and ending with the so-called LNG-heavy. The difficulty of the task becomes more complicated when the analysed surface over which a depressurization incident takes place involves water. The problem deepens even further when the analysed substance possesses explosive properties. Then, apart from regular substance concentration, upper and lower flammability limit ought to be considered. Calculations were conducted with DNV-Phast software, version 7.11.

Applying Harmonic Analysis in the Measurements of Geometrical Deviations of Crankshafts – Roundness Shapes Analysis

Abstract

The article presents measuring procedures and principles of determining deviations of shape and location of the crankshaft main necks assembly axis. We also described mathematical methods of roundness shapes description based on the harmonic analysis theory for the cases when the shaft is set with the external journals in prisms and for the case when the shaft is set on the external front faces in the claws. The results of sample calculations realized on the basis of the proposed mathematical methods have been presented in a form of diagrams of so called amplitude spectrum and in a graphic form of roundness shapes expressed in a polar coordinate system. The procedures described find a practical use during measurements of geometrical deviations of crankshafts realized on the basis of a measuring system with so called flexible support of the measured object.

Applying Harmonic Analysis in the Measurements of Geometrical Deviations of the Crankshafts – Selecting Support Conditions

Abstract

The article presents principles of the most suitable support conditions which enable elimination of deflections and elastic deformations of crankshafts under their self-weight. On the basis of the formulated principles sample calculations of force values of support reactions were performed. This guarantees zero value of deflections on main journals depending on the angle of rotation of the shaft, applying available programme of strength calculations Nastran FX 2010. The obtained results have been approximated with a mathematical equation applying the calculating method based on the harmonic analysis theory. Then a comparative assessment of the force diagram (the forces were obtained via strength calculations and mathematical model including so called mutual inter-correlation coefficient) was made. The obtained results of comparative analysis showed high correspondence between the compared diagrams. Presented procedures of determining the required forces ensuring elimination of deflections and elastic deformations can be applied to measurements of crankshaft geometrical deviations realized on the basis of a measuring system with, so called, flexible support of a measured object.

Identification Accuracy of Additional Wave Resistance Through a Comparison of Multiple Regression and Artificial Neural Network Methods

Abstract

The article presents the use of multiple regression method to identify added wave resistance. Added wave resistance was expressed in the form of a four-state nominal function of: “thrust”, “zero”, “minor” and “major” resistance values. Three regression models were developed for this purpose: a regression model with linear variables, nonlinear variables and a large number of nonlinear variables. The nonlinear models were developed using the author's algorithm based on heuristic techniques. The three models were compared with a model based on an artificial neural network. This study shows that non-linear equations developed through a multiple linear regression method using the author’s algorithm are relatively accurate, and in some respects, are more effective than artificial neural networks.

Applying the Anticipatory Failure Determination at a Very Early Stage of a System’S Development: Overview and Case Study

Abstract

Anticipatory Failure Determination (AFD) is a tool used in the TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) methodology. This article introduces its concept and describes the process of AFD in different versions of the method. The article presents the application of the AFD method at a very early state of a system’s development, i.e. its concept formulation stage, which corresponds to a technology readiness level (TRL) equal to 2. The system under analysis is a set of devices used to reduce displacement ship hull resistance. The system was modelled using functional analysis. An analysis of system resources was then carried out. Possible direct, indirect, and accident-related failures were identified. A multi-criteria analysis of the causes of system failures was conducted from which the top 10 potential failures were selected. Observations were made on the applicability of AFD in respect to systems not yet implemented.

The paper deals with the use of Lean Manufacturing tools in improving the production process of car arm rests in a car manufacturing company in Poland. The article describes the original condition of a single production process of assembling ready pieces to produce car arm rests. The original condition was assessed and described with the use of some basic Lean indicators and value stream mapping. The aforementioned tools allowed to assess the process condition and to identify the organizational issues and their sources. It also enabled to reorganize the process and increase its efficiency. The further part of the article describes the results of improvement actions. The process assessment was held and improvements introduced in the first quarter of 2018.

Tests of an Innovative Controller Designed to Control the Powered Roof Support

Abstract

The article presents the methodology and results of tests of a prototype controller designed for the electrohydraulic control system of a powered roof support. This controller is the basic part of the developed, innovative control system. The tests were carried out on a custom-designed testing station, equipped with one section of a roof support. The aim of the research was to check the functionality and speed of the controller's response while working with the actual support section. The tested controller and the control system has a modular structure, which greatly facilitates its operation and use. Measurements of control functions were carried out on the controller connected to the electrohydraulic control block. The research mainly focused on determining the period starting from the moment of providing the signal to the moment of switching on the basic functions performed by the support section. The obtained results confirm the assumptions made. The controller's operation is very stable, and its response times are very short. It can therefore be assumed that the tested controller is correctly designed and constructed. This creates great possibilities for its practical application in the built-in system for controlling the roof support. This may be particularly important in the case of high-efficiency longwall complexes, for which wireless control of the support is planned to be used. The presented research methodology and obtained results should therefore be an important source of information in the field of testing controllers for powered roof supports.

Abstract

The Europe 2020 strategy (European Commission, 2010) calls a bioeconomy as a key element for smart and green growth in Europe. The development of a greener and more resource-efficient economy gives rise to new technologies and materials, which in turn may result in increased exposure to biological agents or combinations of different potentially harmful factors. For example, the expanding recycling industry employs an increasing number of workers which have to face various health problems (pulmonary, gastrointestinal and skin problems) as a result of exposure to biological agents such as airborne microorganisms. However, specific numbers for occupational diseases in this sector are still lacking. There are various workplaces and professional activities especially from the green industry for which exposure to microbiological agents occur unexpectedly and in an uncontrolled way. The issue of uncontrolled microbial exposure there is for example in waste treatment and for retrofitting activities, both growing sectors of employment in a greening society. As a result of the problem in the green industrial sector, there is a need to develop tools for risk assessment and prevention measures. In order to be able to develop suitable risk management strategies, a further development of detection and identification methods for biological agents is needed to cover the whole spectrum of microorganisms. the present paper focuses on the microbiological risk assessment in the context of the development of new and safe industrial products and processes of green industry (bioindustry and bioprocessing).

Use of Triz SU-Field Models in the Process of Improving the Injector of an Internal Combustion Engine

Abstract

The article describes a method for analyzing and solving problem situations with the use of Su-Field models and 76 inventive standards. These tools are part of the “Theory of Inventive Problem Solving”. The author has presented the basic concepts of Su-Field models, including in the compilation of the most commonly used substances their fields and types of interactions in Su-Field models. The inventive standards have also been presented and grouped. Attempts have been made to solve two undesirable situations that occur during the operation of a complex technical system, which is the fuel injector of the self-ignition engine. Problem situations related to insufficient impact were modelled - too low tightening of the injector spring, and negative (harmful) interaction - erosive wear of the holes in the atomizer nozzle. Using the inventive standards of Class-1 and Class-2, general solutions to these problems have been found. After the transformation, exemplary detailed ways of solving the aforementioned problems have been presented in order to improve the design of the injector for these models. A summary and comments on the applicability of the presented methodology, regarding such complex technical systems, have also been presented.

This paper presents the process of designing Research and Development actions for innovative technology of highly efficient manufacturing of Spunlace non-woven fabric with the use of the designed demonstrative technological line. Both the designing of the technological line and the research are response to the market needs of the personal care products manufacturers in Poland and in the world. Clients’ expectations concerning this matter deal with increasing the production volume as well as providing better quality of the products. Due to limited (and fully exploited) production capacities and already-known technical problems in the enterprise where the research has been carried out, the authors designed a concept of innovative controlling of the technological line gradually increasing its efficiency. In order to do so, the authors proposed research based on designing the technological line mathematical model, creating its prototype and testing its operational capacities, saving the data in the database and then the use of this empirical data to the technological line parametrisation depending on the properties and destination of the manufactured products.

Review of the Hard-Facing Technology Application for Reparation of the Given Parts in Various Branches of Industry

This paper deals with the problem of defining the optimal procedure for reparation of the machine parts of large dimensions and complex shapes. The procedure consists of establishing the causes of the part's damages, definition of the reparation technology, with selection of its parameters and ways of execution. The reparation is done by hard-facing, with heat treatment that consists of preheating, additional heating and the post hard-facing tempering. The process parameters' selection includes choosing the right filler metal(s), ways and order of depositing the hard-faced layers, ways of reaching and maintaining the preheating temperatures, checking of the base metal's chemical composition and mechanical properties and deciding on the post-process heat and mechanical processing of the executed hard-facing. The executed reparation of the forging hammer's mallet, presented in details, serves as an example how the reparation can successfully serve as a substitute for procuring the new part and thus producing the savings both directly in lower costs and indirectly in shortening the down-time of the damaged part operation.

Innovative Adaptive Control of Material Fatigue Test Machines Using an MCS Controller

Abstract

The paper presents some issues related to the control of fatigue test machines based on W(t) parameter taking into account the simultaneous interaction of stress and strain. This parameter is defined as a product of these values. Such a research method represents a new approach in fatigue testing with an innovative control system. Because of the W(t) function characteristics, the system presents nonlinear behavior and there is a significant deterioration of the control quality and the controlled signal significantly differs from the reference signal waveform. This problem can be solved by introducing a nonlinear block into the feedback loop. Fatigue tests have been carried out for sinusoidal and randomized reference signal waveforms. These tests have proved that the controlled signal follows reference values with an appropriate control quality.

Application of Arduino Module to Research in Surface Physics

Abstract

During the semiconductor or graphene wafers surface were investigated, the Arduino module was applied to control the impact point of the laser beam. While the pulse signal of laser beam impacts to surface selected material and the material is exposed to enough strong magnetic field, the photomagnetoelectric effect takes place. This causes the electrical signal in the measurement coil, which is connected to amplifiers. The paper presents application of Arduino UNO module to control the position in two dimensions (in the XY plane) of investigated silicon or graphene wafers while the photomagnetoelectric effect is measuring. The Arduino drive (through the integrated circuit with power transistors) the steps and shift of a dedicated table with a sample situated at the top of the table. Constructed equipment, based on Arduino board, allows for one step size of 1.25 μm in X-axis and Y-axis, and in effect, the each square millimeter contains 640000 measurement points. We are able also to modify the Arduino program for motors controller any moment. Moreover, it is also possible to apply the obtain method to investigate another semiconductor materials. The commercially available similar devices don’t have all need functions and they are incomparably more expensive.

A Fast Method of Identifying Rechargeable Batteries Condition and Defects

Abstract

The paper presents fast method of identifying industrial and general use rechargeable batteries condition and defects exemplary lithium-ion cells. The proposed method is based on measuring a internal battery electrical impedance for selected frequency points and the next the results are compare with reference characteristics. Diagnostic process is performed for a few minutes when the battery is charging or discharging. So far used, the most popular methods require controlled charging and discharging cells to determine approximately of their capacity and need a long time of the diagnostic process (about few hours to over a dozen hours). The new method allows the dramatically reduction of measurement time and in effect reduces financial work costs of service. The paper shows a various setup systems with commonly use RLC impedance bridges were used in the research. The analysis of measurements allowed to determine the specific spectral function, which indicates rechargeable battery condition. Moreover, it is also possible to apply the obtain method to another electrochemical cell type.

Augmented reality technology (AR), also known as mixed reality, allows to enhance the seen reality with additional, virtual objects, displayed right in front of the user’s eyes. The article presents the concept of using Augmented Reality glasses, to support the user with pre-defined knowledge and instructions, giving the ability to do the job without almost any idea of what should be done. The operator simply follows the instructions shown in front of the eyes and communicate with the system with simple gesture and voice. Additionally, the article touches the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) which will allow the system in the future to have not only the pre-defined, hard coded instructions, but also the flexibility to give different hints to the user based on a different situation observed.

In the recent years, industrial automatics practically was used in all domains of economy. Particularly, it concerns to manufacturing processes and technological processes. It seems that in these systems, very important meaning have measuring and control devices, installed practically in all production machines. Operational parameters of machines, registered by these systems are the kind of source of very important information, which not always are utilized in proper way by the users. Particularly, it concerns mining branch, where more technically advanced machines are used. However, not always their users utilize the big potential of these machines. For this reason, in the paper there are presented results of studies, enabling the application of industrial automatic systems to analyze operation states of machines, based on registered parameters of these machines. Longwall shearer was submitted to detailed analysis as the most important machine in mining exploitation process. There are presented proposals for application registered data for determine effectiveness of its utilization and to diagnose its technical condition. Presented paper is aimed to realize and encouraging users to wider practical use of the capabilities of industrial automation systems. This should improve efficiency and safety of production processes.

One of the most important aspects related to the proper functioning of prosperous enterprises in the wood industry is to ensure safe and hygienic working conditions. The fulfillment of this condition is obligatory for all workplaces regardless of the field of activity. Due to the specificity of the industry based on wood processing, this industry is inseparably connected with the problem of pollination at workplaces. The chips that are formed during processing make it difficult to work, remain in and around workplaces, creating additional risks and impairing the quality of the manufactured products. It is therefore necessary to apply solutions to eliminate the dust hazard. One of such solutions, belonging to collective protection measures against pollination, are dedusting installations. One of the tools to improve working conditions is mandatory risk assessment. Thanks to its reliable implementation, it is possible to identify hazards occurring at workplaces and take measures to improve working conditions. Proper management of occupational risk is one of the key elements to ensure protection against risks at an appropriate level. The article analyzes the impact of the dedusting installation on the reduction of selected health hazards for employees in the selected carpentry shop.

The article presents the current topic of the possibility of mechanical extraction of hard and abrasive rocks using mechanized wall systems. The problem of extracting ores from thin strata precludes the possibility of further use of current technologies involving a human at the face. Currently, the operation is carried out using explosives in column-pillar systems. In systems with a chamber column, all major processes are mechanized and carried out by self-propelled drilling and bolting machines, loaders as well as hauling and auxiliary trucks. These machines are operated in the workplace by operators. For many years, effective mechanical excavation methods were sought that would allow the development of a mining machine and a mechanised longwall complex. Such a complex is to allow excavation without the presence of humans at the face. The article presents the current technical capabilities, assumptions and requirements for such a solution. Then, an innovative longwall complex equipped with a disc shearer is introduced. The technology of work and achievable productivity are briefly presented. A worn shearer, a face conveyor and a powered support are the subject of AGH inventions.

Of key importance in the field of competitiveness is access to innovative technologies providing a competitive advantage and the ability to cooperate in their acquisition with other entities, e.g. in clusters. The authors attempted to identify the sources of technology and financing options used by companies in the metal processing industry. The studied entities are part of a cluster of national importance, and the adopted research method is based on an interview questionnaire. Studies have shown that most companies buy ready-made solutions and to a lesser extent cooperate in acquiring technology. Noticeable is also a relatively large share of financing investments in new technologies from public funds.

Concept of Methodology for Supporting Information and Technical Resources Management in Crisis Situations

The article presents a concept of the methodology of managing information and technical resources related to carrying on the activities and actions described in the first part of the study, and the majority of legally determined actions resulting from the emergence of a crisis situation. As a research area, a special public utility object was chosen, namely a civil airport. The crisis situation that occurred at the airport requires the involvement of many services that aim to implement actions aimed at solving it. The process of the above-mentioned activities, covers formal, organizational and technical aspects. These aspects are briefly shown in the second part of the article. In the third part, special attention was paid to collecting information flows on the crisis situation. On the basis of the research, it was pointed out that the diversity of notification systems, both in the aspect of the available information resources and technical infra-structure, makes the information exchange process disturbed, which may have a significant impact on the time and manner of resolving the crisis situation. The authors in the article point out a possible way to solve this problem by unifying the system of informing all the services involved in activities in a crisis situation. The final part of the article attempts to present a methodology, based on the idea of creating templates of actions, activities and processes, the use of which for crisis management will allow involved bodies to improve the effectiveness of services in crisis conditions, especially in the area of making decisions based on available information.

Innovative Visualization System Designed to Monitor Parameters of Mining Systems Operation

Mining machines suitable for hard coal mining, due to the specifics of this industry must be characterized by very high technical parameters. In particular, it concerns their durability, reliability and availability. Currently used machines approved for operation in underground conditions meet such requirements. Nevertheless, during their operation it is reasonable to conduct supervision and control of work parameters. This applies to both machine manufacturers and users, which is especially important in the event of a failure. Mine employees should be able control of the entire operation process. This control can be effective thanks to a visualization system developed to monitor the working parameters of mining systems. The paper discusses the innovative system and presents the results of efficiency tests. They concerned the visualization of the operation of a powered roof support. The obtained results indicate that the assumed goal of the system has been achieved. The system is built on elements of industrial automation, which guarantees the reliability of the indicated values. Its graphic layout and selection of the presented parameters are also approved. It should also be emphasized that the system can work with currently operating systems and is easy to expand. According to the Authors, the system should find a wide application in practice.

Surface Treatment Proposals for the Automotive Industry by the Example of 316L Steel

Nowadays, stainless steels are very interesting and promising materials with unique properties. They are characterized high mechanical strengths, high toughness and good corrosion resistance, so that can be used in many industrial sectors. An interesting alternative to steels obtained using the conventional methods is sintered stainless steel manufactured using the powder metallurgy technology. AISI 316L stainless steel is one of the best-known and widely used austenitic stainless steel. Modification of surface properties of stainless steels, in particular by applying the Cr3C2 coating is becoming more and more popular. The technique of atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) was used to deposit Cr3C2 - NiAl powder on stainless steel surface. In this study presents arc surface remelting of two types of stainless steel was used by GTAW method in order to improve function and usability these materials. The results of optical microscope metallographic, hardness and scratch test are presented. Initial Excitation Issues of Synchronous Generator with VSI Inverter in Varying Rotational Speed Operation

Abstract

Synchronous self-excited generators still are and probably will be the most popular 3-phase alternators installed in inland power stations so onboard of seagoing ships. Because of fuel savings and environmental restrictions Diesel, dual-fuel and gas propulsion engines for alternators of wide-range varying revolutions drives are increasingly used. There must be efficient way of creating 3-phase voltages of desired constant parameters ensured when generator produces variable amplitudes and frequencies of voltages because of changing rotational speed. As the control method modified field oriented control widely used with squirrel cage induction machines was chosen. This control method involves decoupling of currents and control voltages to flux and torque components and keeping them in optimal (orthogonal) condition. In order to obtain proper excitation and operation of such generator several factors have to be taken into account. Nonlinear dependence of voltage generated from rotational speed of self-excited synchronous generator is one of the factors that affects initial excitation process thus specific control method while generator startup. Theoretical background of synchronous generator excitation and voltage source inverter adopted FOC control method along with experimental results obtained in laboratory test bench of 5,5 kW generator and conclusions were presented.

Abstract

Process modelling is a very important stage in a Business Process Management cycle enabling process analysis and its redesign. Many sources of information for process modelling purposes exist. It may be an analysis of documentation related directly or indirectly to the process being analysed, observations or participation in the process. Nowadays, for this purpose, it is increasingly proposed to use the event logs from organization’s IT systems. Event logs could be analysed with process mining techniques to create process models expressed by various notations (i.e. Petri Nets, BPMN, EPC). Process mining enables also conformance checking and enhancement analysis of the processes. In the paper issues related to process modelling and process mining are briefly discussed. A case study, an example of delivery process modelling with process mining technique is presented.

The paper also contains procedures for curriculum development as well as evaluation and assessment. Implementation of a comprehensive continuous quality improvement process (CQI) for individual courses as well as the entire Engineering program is being discussed and analyzed. The conclusions include practical recommendations for the effective closing of the CQI loop.

According to the Theory of Constraints by Goldratt system bottlenecks are key to improving productivity and profitability of the entire production system. An important issue in the practical application of this theory is to identify bottlenecks in the system. The aim of this paper is to develop practical steps to identify bottlenecks in the production system characterised by a homogeneous flow. The paper includes a case study which shows six steps that allowing to specify not only the first bottleneck of the system but to develop a comprehensive plan for removing bottlenecks.

Tightening the environmental norms that result from the priorities of the EU 2030 Energy and Climate Package and the reform of the EU ETS have caused the necessity to implement an effective system of managing the risk of carbon dioxide emission and integrate it with the existing enterprise management system. Evaluation of the direction and strength of correlation between EUA price changes and energy companies stock price returns is crucial from point of view the managerial staff making proper decisions about the use of the CO2 emission permits by energy companies. It is an important stage of carbon emission risk management process. The aim of this paper is to verify the possibility of use the multifactor models with GARCH structure as a tool supporting the carbon emission management process in energy companies. Empirical analysis is connected with the estimation of multifactor models with GARCH structure in the Phase II and Phase III of the EU ETS functioning for two groups of Polish energy companies: group of the Respect Index companies and others. Such an approach allows to check whether the Respect Index companies are more robust than others on the carbon emission risk, in particular the EUA price risk associated with the intensification works on modifying the EU ETS functioning. We found that the impact of EUA price changes on energy companies stock returns and their volatility is statistically insignificant in case of all Respect Index companies.

Analysis of Powered Roof Support Operation Based on a Virtual Driver

Abstract

The article presents the results of tests and analyses of control functions performed by a powered roof support which is the basic part of a powered longwall system. The research was based on an innovative registration and measurement system dedicated to this specific range of tests. The basic element of this system is a virtual driver. It is equipped with input and output systems to connect standard physical voltage signals. The tests were carried out on a prototype powered roof support type ZPR- 15/35-POz. The presented research methodology and obtained results are an element of new research methods developed for powered support based on virtual controllers. The applied solution generates less costs than the devices currently used, while its functionality is significantly greater. The system developed by the Authors supports innovative and, to a certain extent, intelligent IT solutions for testing control elements. This developed system is suitable to be applied in a wide range of research such as diagnosis of mining machinery control elements and other industries in the near future.

Mitigating Uncertainties in Decision Making in Early Phases of RFID Implementation

Abstract

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is still a relatively new technology for many manufacturing and logistics companies. These companies experience uncertainties about RFID implementation, so they take steps to mitigate them. This article presents multiple case studies to design a conceptual framework to mitigate such barriers. The goal of this research was to test propositions that companies: often are not convinced about the maturity and performance of RFID technology; perform typical actions to test uncertainties; and need proof of the benefits of RFID technology before implementation. It was demonstrated that companies conduct proof of RFID technology activities (demonstrations and reference visits) to test RFID performance. These are required to test the technology in operation. Conclusions of this research may serve RFID systems providers and end users of technology by facilitating a better understanding of decision making processes during early phases of RFID implementation.

This article is a proposition to use modern CAD (Computer Aided Design) solutions to design industrial infrastructure, and show many benefits of their practical use, avoiding numerously mistakes while the investment process, at the same time increasing the quality of created products during reducing the costs associated with their production. The paper proposes a method of stocktaking of the current state and methods of spatial layout analysis of planned investment using smart databases to configure the individual manufacture slots. The method of material flow analysis in the virtual model of the production line was presented, tools for the analysis of the production line were indicated, especially focused on collision identification, work schedule creation and parametric analysis of designed installations.

Improving Production Efficiency of Large Size Molds as a Result of Innovative Quality Control Process

Abstract

One of the basic elements of the technological chain of manufacturing products in the European Union is the metal processing sector, which is one of the dynamically developing industries. An important department in the aforementioned sector is the production of unconventional, large-size injection molds and tools weighing more than 10 tons. Very often large-size components in the production process must be precisely checked and subjected to appropriate corrective actions at the quality control stage, in order to avoid non-compliance with customer requirements, and thus increased costs related to reducing production efficiency, logistics of large-size elements from the customer back to the manufacturer of the mold in order to correct it, and also complaints of the final product connected with dimensional changes and surface defects in the casting process. This paper presents a case study of the implementation of the innovative quality control process to verify the production of large-size molds for aluminum high pressure casting with the spotting press machine, allowing for product quality improvement. The introduction of the innovative press for spotting molds to the quality control stage also leads to the improvement of production efficiency, which was confirmed by the results of an increase of the OEE coefficient in the entire production process. In addition, a significant reduction in the production time of products was achieved, and the cost of the mold production process was lowered.

In the article the idea of the “Smart City” is analysed mainly from the view point of technology. The author presents in the first part of the paper the brief review of technical issues connected with implementing the concept of “Smart City” into practice. These review is illustrated in the second part of the paper by some practical results, which are treated as a background for formulating a research problem which is tried to be presented in the third part of the paper: the problem of recognizing needs in the complex field of activities, assessing these needs and - basing on results of such an assessment - designing some integrated solutions that should be used in management of the identified resources. The final part of the paper contains some conclusions and introduces directions for further research.

The aim of the article is to get to know the essence of production control in the activity of enterprises. This background presents: the role of control in the enterprise and its classification with particular emphasis on production control. Production control plays an important role in the proper course of the production process. On the one hand, it comes down to the preparation of production plans, creating cost budgets for the company's production parts, and on the other hand to control their implementation. In the scope of production control, economic control of production is taken into account, defined as a direct and indirect impact on the shape of the assortment- and quantity-related structure of production and its course in time and space to ensure, in the given circumstances, the best achievement of the organization's goals. Production control may refer to strategic planning, where the most important is to strike a balance between the flexibility of using production means and workforce, availability of technology and substitute technologies or operational planning, where the key task is to find and eliminate bottlenecks occurring in the production process.

Abstract

Polish energy security is based mainly on a coal. Such dependency will be still maintained for several years. It is therefore necessary to improve the economic situation of polish mining companies. The mining companies in Poland are operating under tremendous uncertainty of turbulent environment. The article presents used by the authors methods to facilitate the creation and selection of optimal production strategy. These are scenario planning, forecasting and linear programming, which allow the simulation of company operations in the future. The authors suggest the most successful and optimal forecasting models for the Polish mining industry, as well as factors affecting the demand for hard coal in Poland. The manuscript presents also possible to apply coal production strategies and the method of evaluation and selection of optimal strategy in the difficult conditions of Polish mining companies environment. This makes it possible to take a decision burdened with minor errors and less risk.

Microtools Based on the Relational Data Model – Conformity between Foreign and Primary Keys

Tools which support and automate the execution of information processes may be created in a spreadsheet by following the author’s signature concept of “Microtools Based on the Relational Data Model”. While developing them, one must apply adequate solutions enabling representation of identified entities and ensuring data integrity as well as acquisition of the reports and collations assumed to be generated. This article addresses the problem of conformity between values of foreign keys in child entities and values of primary keys in parent entities. Four cases of relationships between a parent entity and a child entity have been discussed. One of the criteria that differentiates between these cases is the occurrence of a simple key or a composite key. Another applicable criterion is the sequence in which data are entered using the tool. With regard to all the identified cases, solutions that support data integrity have been presented and discussed. In accordance with the concept in question, the solutions proposed in the paper make use of standard spreadsheet features and components, without involving any additional code created in any programming language.

Forecasts of Size of Steel Production in Poland until 2022

The article presents the results of forecasting the volume (size) of steel production in Poland based on selected adaptation models. The data used in forecasting were the annual size of steel production in the period from 2000 to 2017. Data on the size of steel production in Poland were obtained from reports of both the Polish Steel Association in Katowice (Poland) and the World Steel Association. The accuracy of predictions was determined by the values of real deviation of forecasted variable from forecasts (extinguished - ex post) using square root calculated from mean square error of apparent forecasts, ie RMSE - Root Mean Square Error and mean value of relative error of expired forecasts Ψ. Forecasts can be used in making decisions in metallurgical enterprises for building production scenarios.

Integrated management systems are increasingly used in modern enterprises. They allow for a more comprehensive approach to a number of important issues, affecting the modification of activities and process improvement. However, the integration itself often does not provide the right effects (apart from economic ones) without leading to real, multifaceted coupling of activities between the components of the system. To obtain such effects, it is necessary to connect the components in one system. Knowledge management can be a helpful element in this activity. Each component of the integrated management systems generates a large number of data and information. Their use is possible only by building on their basis knowledge leading to improvement of activities or innovation. The use of knowledge, especially hidden knowledge that contains unique and inaccessible knowledge for competitors, should be a priority for today's enterprises. The study presents considerations regarding the possibility of including knowledge management in integrated management systems, treating knowledge as a basic element connecting the system.

Growing competition, clients’ requirements as well as advances in technology make modern industrial enterprises search for a way of achieving and maintaining strong position on the market. One of the principal and at the same time necessary conditions to achieve this aim is continuous development of all of the processes in order to fulfil various clients’ expectations. Enterprises make use of different concepts and management methods which in significant way upgrade ongoing processes by raising their efficiency. One of such is the concept of ‘lean’ production - Lean Manufacturing. Management according to Lean Management rules allows to produce more with the use of less resources - at the same time approaching the aim which is to deliver clients the exact product they want. The process of resources use limitation is not easy to perform however, the concept of Lean Manufacturing by the application of chosen tools allows successfully and effectively to introduce ‘lean’ model of management in an enterprise and undertaking following improvement activities in every of its field.

Information Quality Management and the Aspect of Profit and Loss in the Customer Service Process

Risk management is an inseparable part of every organization's life. It should be an integral part of the strategy implemented in all of the organizations. The strategy should be constructed in such a way that the management of the risk functions not only as a system avoiding losses, but also allowing to perceive and use opportunities, and create new opportunities for the organization. The aim of the article is to demonstrate the necessity of analyzing the risk of information quality, which significantly affects the customer service process. This analysis was carried out on the basis of T. Kaczmarek's research, which specified the list of 46 elements of the sick enterprise. On its basis, the areas in which information about customer service were created were analyzed, which allowed to identify potentially threatened places and the effects of these threats. The analysis showed that the highest level of risk is related to the delivery time. Individual and corporate clients pay special attention to the lack, or incorrect information on securing the shipment. The lowest level of risk in the examined enterprise concerns the terms of technical assistance, because this item is usually described by the seller in the purchase regulations.

Economic Aspects of Analysis of Occurrence of Incidential Events on the Scope of Security of Information in a Production Enterprise

Abstract

This article presents structure and analysis of possible events for information security of a production company. The aim of the analysis is to identify incident events, their time and frequency. The analysis includes occurrence of notifications, threatening events, employee errors and false alarms. Also, the conducted research takes into account the functions performed in the enterprise. For these events, a daily distribution of events and statistical analysis of their occurrence were developed. Thanks to the analysis of the phenomena in time, enterprises can introduce actions preventing the occurrence of incidents. The conducted research has shown that employees report incidents which, in their opinion, constitute an incident, which greatly facilitates the work of the information security administrator. These events are analyzed and classified accordingly. The analysis showed that most events take place between midnight and two in the morning. The conducted analysis is a pilot study carried out in one large enterprise in the metallurgical industry.

Job satisfaction is one of the most researched topics in management literature taking into consideration the fact that it has been found out that this concept has many practical implications in the workplace. Job satisfaction is very complex phenomenon which is influenced by numerous factors. Previous studies provide a partial view of job satisfaction, because they are usually focused on the relationship between a single factor and job satisfaction, without taking a global view to indicate how different factors simultaneously affect job satisfaction. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how different factors such as: work family balance, teamwork, personal environment fit, job security and supervisor support simultaneously influence job satisfactions. The sample of the study includes employees of Polish small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis is used to analyze data collected in surveys from 274 employees. The results contribute to research on job satisfaction by outlining several combinations of factors which create a paths to explain employee job satisfaction: (1) teamwork and supervisor support, (2) personal environment fit, job security and supervisor support with absence of work family balance, (3) work family balance, job security and supervisor support.

The aim of the article is the analysis of controlling in relation to the management of a contemporary enterprise. Against this background, the essence and concept of controlling, its classification and importance for the development of the company were presented. The scope of controlling applications in enterprises' operations depends mainly on the needs of management staff and their managerial awareness. The fact that the views concerning him are not unambiguous, they do not have a universal form, equally understood terms and tasks, strictly defined and assigned actions or methods, is of great significance. The area with which controlling is related applies to all areas of the company's operations. Support for business management takes place in the area of the entire organization. Controlling with its instruments reaches everywhere, coordinates management in all company's cells. Presented premises in the scope of organization of controlling in enterprises, allow to state that the smaller enterprise, the more often controlling appears as a linear cell or a group of cells located in the linear hierarchy. In addition, they indicate that the time of implementation of controlling in the case of large enterprises (in this case also state-owned) is longer than in enterprises from the SME sector (most often private), which is mainly related to the reluctant attitude to changes of employees and management of these organizations, and their internal adjustments.

Use of the Decision Table for Supporting Management Process in Mining Companies

Abstract

The article presents a proposal of use a decision table to support the decision-making process in scope of maintenance management in mining companies. In particular, it refers to decisions related to evaluation and improvement of mining machinery use in the mining production process. The article presents the theoretical foundations of decision tables building and characteristics of the most important stages of creating this table. This whole process was tried to refer specifically the mining industry. For this reason, during construction of the decision tables, the results of research on the effectiveness of the selected mining machines were used. The conducted research provided a lot of data, information and knowledge on the work of the particular mining machines, especially regarding the number and reasons for unplanned breaks during the machines’ work. The developed decision table will consist of conditions, rules and actions whose purpose is to define the recommendations for the particular groups of participants in the mining production process. The obtained results will form the basis for the development of the recommendations and proposals of actions to improve the level of use of mining machines. The authors focused mainly on the practical use of tables to support the decision-making process regarding maintenance and improvement of effectiveness of mining machines. The obtained results confirm the validity of the adopted assumptions. Decision tables can become an important tool that supports the decision-making process within mining companies.

Abstract

By work injury, a health damage or employee´s decease are meant if those were caused independently on employee´s will by short-period, accidental and violent effect of external impacts while fulfilling working tasks or directly related to it. Also such injury is considered a work injury, which happened when the employee fulfilled his/her working tasks. Legal regulation of the rights and obligations of employers as well as employees as it comes to occupational injuries is being often ignored by both parties of labour-law relationship. In fact, insufficient knowledge of this topic can bring many complications to both parties. It is necessary to keep in mind that not each injury can be considered work injury. The aim of this article is to analyze legal aspects of work injury supported by judicature and statistical data out of segment of work injuries in the Czech Republic. The law is not always clear and allows different explanation, as it also does not consider all situations and questions. Answers to problematic points are more and more often being found in judicature - deciding practice of courts, its conclusions, explanations and statements are evaluated. There is an example of injury happened during a business trip used in this article, by which it will be explained what activities can be thought such relating to working tasks fulfilment. When work injury occurs, the employer is obligated to clarify the reasons and circumstances of it. A monitoring of statistical data of work injuries and their causes seems to be a significant basis when elaborating company risk analyzes, prevention and risk management, occupational health and safety, working conditions and environment.

The study presents the impact of eco-innovation and policy conducive to the implementation of the principles of sustainable development in agriculture on economic development. The starting point was the analysis of economic growth models and indicating in them the approach to innovation for the implementation of sustainable development. The specifics of eco-innovation in the agricultural sector and their typology have been presented. Due to the complexity of innovative processes and in particular the resulting effects, multi-component measures of innovation and eco-innovation have been discussed. In the last part, using the panel analysis, the effect of eco-innovation in agriculture on socio-economic development at the level of the entire economy has been demonstrated.

Abstract

This article presents the challenges that mining companies have in the face of the Industry 4.0 philosophy. Transformation of mining businesses into Industry 4.0 appears unavoidable. Due to the specific nature of the sector, the transformation will not be an easy one. This paper discusses the obstacles and challenges related to the transformation of businesses in the mining industry into the Industry 4.0. The history of industrial revolutions was presented, also as the idea of Industry 4.0 with its basic components. The concept of Industry 4.0 is also outlined and the studies which indicate the key issues in the transformation process are also cited. Based on these studies, it can be seen that the vast majority are issues in the field of production engineering and properly educated and qualified staff. Four main areas in which transformation into Industry 4.0 should be taking place are identified. Particular emphasis is placed on the area of technology and organizational culture. The mutual relations of management functions and ICT technologies have also been presented, which is one of the elements of the idea of Industry 4.0. Finally, the potential benefits for the organizational culture of the business of implementing the Industry 4.0 concepts are discussed.

Abstract

The research problem raised in the paper concerns materials management of mining enterprises. It is an important area of activity in these enterprises, mainly due to the fact that the cost of materials consumption is, after the personnel cost, the second position in the cost structure in terms of value. In order to conduct the mining works planned in an efficient way, it is necessary to provide materials supply as well as to prepare them and transfer to production. It can only be achieved in the way of appropriate planning, which includes the division into product range and time periods. The way of planning should be adjusted to the specific conditions and the character of consumption, as well as link those with an operational production plan. Although a great number of publications on planning methods can be found, not many of them refer to the specificity of mining production processes, especially material requirements planning. The objective of this paper is to present the theoretical assumptions of the material requirements planning process and the practical aspects of this process in the operating activity of mining enterprises. The paper is of theoretical and cognitive study character. The research was based on a systematic review method - systematic literature review, supplemented with the analysis of internal documents and programs used in materials management of mining enterprises.

With rapid growth of the Internet, companies adopted the new information and communication technology to offer e-services to their customers. This paper addresses e-service quality issue in the electronic marketplace. Service quality of e-retailers has been recognized as an important factor in determining success of e-commerce ventures. The objective of this research is to develop a theoretical, comprehensive, and measurable framework for assessing the quality of e-commerce services and to indicate factors, which are significant for customers satisfaction and high quality online shopping experiences. This paper reviewed the most recognized evaluation criteria, which are used in different e-commerce websites, and proposes a general comprehensive framework for evaluating the quality of any e-commerce service regarding to two main areas: website features and customer service in e-commerce platform. The detailed list of quality attributes in both assessment areas was derived from the reviewed literature. The survey and analysis described in this paper enable a better understanding of the influence these quality attributes on the main quality assessment categories. The results provide an important foundation for the understanding of quality in e-commerce services that will allow to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each e-commerce service. This paper concludes by discussing the findings of this study and highlighting areas for the future research.

Value Streams Mapping in the Implementation of Process Innovations – in the Case of Single–Unit Production

The visual management technique used in process improvement, i.e. value stream mapping (VSM) has been presented in the paper. Value stream mapping is one of the basic management tools in the context of Lean Management or Lean Production. It allows to visualize the flow of decision, information, material and their connections in the full production cycle (from the order, through planning, production, to shipping to the customer). VSM is a lean tool that gives the ability to create flows in the process before implementing changes. In this paper, the possibilities of changes planning based on the current and future status maps have been discussed. On the basis of the current state map (CSM), the areas requiring improvement and operations which efficiency is decisive and for the process have been designated. Particular attention has been paid to the possibilities of using VSM in unit production processes. In the paper has been proposed the two possibilities for company development in terms of the improvement technique in line with the Kaizen philosophy as well as the implementation of process innovations. Which means balanced development through the improvement of the existing process or an acute development strategy through the implementation of process innovations (which involves significant costs).

Assessment of Customer Satisfaction as an Element Deciding About Enterprise's Competitiveness

Enterprises which want to ensure a secure and stable market position must constantly look for ways to convince customers (current and potential) that their goods and services are competitive and represent a sufficiently high level of quality, consistent with the their needs. Service enterprises use specific methods and tools to analyze the quality of their services and to be sure that these services are competitive on the market. One of the important elements of such an analysis is the assessment of customer satisfaction. This research should be treated as a key stage in the customer satisfaction management system. Without knowing the customers' expectations, the enterprise is unable to determine what to improve and correct. In this case, the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI), which not only indicates what to improve, but also shows the level of customer satisfaction, should be used. The purpose of the paper is to assess customer satisfaction in a service point of a known producer of men's clothes. The CSI index and a specially developed survey were used for the research. The questionnaire was filled in by the customers of the research service point after the service delivery. According to the obtained results, individual determinants should be maintained and monitored by the enterprise. The research also identified areas for improvement, i.e. product quality, design and ways of payment. However, the overall CSI score is good, which means that despite few problems with customers' satisfaction, they are satisfied with the research service point.

Quality Management in the Process of Selection of Material for Dump Truck Elements

Abstract

The article presents the problem of quality management in the process of material selection for structural elements of a car dump truck. The study took into account the classical management pyramid and there was used the optimization method (generalized objective function). The center that manages the process of production / assembly of the dump truck should be the level of organization that has the highest degree of processing of required information and making strategic decisions in this respect. The design process of structural elements is carried out primarily in terms of the ability to provide adequate physical and mechanical properties in the process. There is a very strong tendency to reduce the own weight of the semi-trailers by increasing the weight of the load. This is an important criterion from the point of view of the economics of operation of technical facilities of this type. The article presents the results of the application of a generalized objective function in the field of material selection for construction elements of a dump truck. The analysis includes structural elements made of S355 steel and Hardox 400 and 450 fine-grain steel.

Cloud Manufacturing Platform and Architecture Design

Abstract

Cloud Manufacturing (CMfg) is an emerging networked manufacturing paradigm and service-oriented manufacturing model, in which distributed manufacturing resources are made available by providers according to consumers’ requirements as on-demand manufacturing services via networks (manufacturing clouds) and cloud manufacturing service platforms. Considering the concept of cloud manufacturing and its operation principle, the paper designs and introduces new proposal of cloud manufacturing service platform architecture, including the following six layers: physical resources layer, soft resources layer, virtual resources layer, services layer, application layer and service-oriented interface layer. After surveying majority of papers introducing architectures of CMfg service platforms, the paper recommends to map both hard as well as soft resources into cloud services from resource layers to virtual resource layer which highlights the core idea of the concept. The paper discusses also the fundamentals of the CMfg paradigm, introduces three groups of actors that participate in a cloud manufacturing system, as well as indicates briefly a typical hierarchy architecture of cloud manufacturing system.

The level of occupational health and safety is one of the determinants of the company's efficiency. The article assessed the quality of general initial training (general training) and initial training at the workplace (on-the-job training) carried out in selected business entities related to the hard coal mining industry. Problem included in the above trainings were interpreted as a criterion function within a multi-criteria analysis based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Application of the AHP method allowed to perform a diagnostic (comparative) assessment of objects (business entities), both objects and accepted assessment criteria were compared in pairs with each other (the evaluator's preferences (subjectivity of assessments) are treated in the Analytic Hierarchy Process as a natural phenomenon).

Creating Participation of Employees in Improving Work Safety in Enterprise

Abstract

The article deals with the issue of employees' participation in the security management system in an enterprise. The issue of participation was presented as well as empirical studies illustrating the problem of the study. The benefits from the creative participation of employees in a safety management system were also shown. It was stated that an employee’s participation in specific areas of business management is important and that it is a desirable direction in the development of the employees' staff and displaying joint responsibility for the workplace. The research was carried out in five enterprises engaged in the business of construction and renovation activities. The surveyed employees were employed in various positions and at various organizational levels, they took part in the survey and in individual interviews. Questions from the first part of the questionnaire generally concerned issues related to occupational health and safety. The second part concerned issues directly related to the safety management system as well as the creativity and participation of employees in improving work safety in the surveyed enterprise. Empirical studies have shown that some of the surveyed employees have a rather passive attitude towards systemic issues. The article uses the approach that puts human events in the epicenter as one of the most important drivers of changes taking place in enterprises. In order to further improve the functioning of the implemented and maintained systems, enterprises have created their own set of practiced forms of employee participation.

Ergonomic and Workflow Study of Sausage Production Process in the Context of Manual Transport Tasks

The aim of the article is to analyze the activities performed manually in a meat processing enterprise in the context of shaping ergonomic working conditions. Based on observational methods, including metric measurements of workstations and an in-depth interview with employees of the enterprise, the activities realized in the production process of the selected sausage product were recognized, with particular emphasis on manual work. On the basis of ergonomic analyzes carried out with the use of 3D SSPP software, groups of activities were identified that carry an increased risk of static load and the occurrence of ailments in the musculoskeletal system. The results of analyzes form the basis for the development of a workflow improvement process resulting from the improvement of manual work conditions.

Abstract

The improvement of production processes is currently one of the key elements of the company's competitiveness. In the pursuit of profit, the rationality of streamlined processes is not always taken into account, i.e. that both process needs and these of employees should be considered. Caring of the comfort of work, of adjusting the workplace to the employee is the main goal of ergonomic activity. On the level of implementation of ergonomic demands depends not only the quality and modernity of the products, but also the ergonomics of the workstation and the production process, forming the basis for better quality and more efficient work. The Improvement of the quality of the ergonomic workplace is possible on the basis of a properly conducted assessment, using a variety of tools. This article presents the evaluation and ergonomic analysis of the work process at four production workplaces, and then indicates the directions of changes. The analysis included elements of physical effort: energy expenditure, static load and traffic monotype. Traditional tools were used, such as OWAS, REBA, and also the use of quality assessment tools (Ishikawa diagram, Pareto-Lorenzo diagram) was proposed in order to suggest solutions to improve the ergonomic quality of the workstations under analysis.

Therefore, the key offenses of art. 220 (Act - Penal Code, 1997) from the point of view of criminal responsibility were subject to analysis, as well as the premises that determine it. In this way, an attempt was made to define the protection and responsibility framework both in the subjective and objective dimension. In the further part of the study, the regulations protecting the life and health of employees with other penal regulations of a general nature were discussed, also in the context of criminal threat dimensions, as well as the premises for not being punished by the perpetrator.

Fault Tree Analysis as a Tool to Increase the Level of Security in an Enterprise

Technological progress, as well as the development of the sciences on occupational health and safety, increased safety and improved working conditions in enterprises of even the most onerous industries. To maintain the required level of safety, preventive actions are taken to identify all hazards in the workplace. In practice, many methods are used to identify hazards depending on the type of technological processes and the types of workstations analyzed. The article presents the advantages of the fault tree analysis method as a tool to support the process safety management in the enterprise. The article presents features of the fault tree analysis method as a tool for better security management in an enterprise. Cause and effect relationships between events in the fault tree schema on selected examples were examined. Indirect and direct causes of accidents and failures in the enterprise have been identified, including human errors (human factor). The use of the fault tree analysis method to support accident and failure risk assessment in an industrial plant was also analyzed.

Assessment of Wood Processing Safety in the Production Organization

Abstract

Occupational health and safety legislation imposes an obligation on the production organization to regularly and comprehensibly inform employees of the dangers, threats and risks involved. In the paper, we assessed the basic requirements of safety in the wood processing workshop on the forming disc saw. Deficiencies in non-compliance with security regulations were determined from the check list analysis (CLA). The safety assessment was performed using the extended point method, where we determined the value of the risk measure. When working on a saw blade, the risk cannot be accepted and safety precautions have to be proposed. For the production organization, we have proposed remedial measures and a safety card to be considered before working on forming disc saw. All the measures proposed by us were accepted and implemented by the production organization. Applying and observing safety measures can prevent the occurrence of an occupational injury or damage to the health of the worker.

The article presents the results of research carried out as a part of a project aimed at integrated ergonomic diagnosis of the work environment in terms of improvement of technical and psychosocial conditions. The research carried out so far included small and medium-sized enterprises located in the Śląskie Voivodeship. The tests included blue-collar workers as well as administrative (white-collar) workers. Ergonomic diagnosis was carried out by direct observation of employees at the workplace using tools such as the Ergonomic Control Test CET II and the Dortmund list. This article presents the results of ergonomic analysis at a workstation with a computer.

Fire Behaviors of the Geomaterial-Based Composite Plaster Coated Building Thermal Isolation Plates

Abstract

Thermal insulation in buildings has been a problem for mankind throughout history. New materials have always been used in this context, and every new material has negative aspects such as environmental, economic and engineering. Although the building exterior insulation materials produced in recent years have made significant progress in terms of thermal comfort, but those with superior properties in resistance to fire are very limited. In this study, considering the environmental sensitivity, the plasters produced from the sands of arenitized granite, micaschist, pumice and expanded perlite rocks and their combinations were applied on expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS) foams and mineral wool for investigating the fire behaviors of each material. As a result of fire tests, it was observed that the most positive values were gained from micaschist based external isolation board, whereas the board obtained from arenitized granite gave the most negative values. With the combination of natural and environmentally friendly materials such as micaschist, perlite and pumice, on a fire resistant insulation material such as mineral wool, a highly fire resistant, environmentally sensitive and economical insulation material can be produced.

The article shows the results of ergonomics diagnosis at the concrete mixer workplace. Above mentioned results constitute only a part of a widespread project which aims at integrated ergonomic diagnosis of workplace environment considering improving both technical conditioning and psycho-social conditioning. Foregoing researches were conducted in several companies in Silesian Voivodeship with regard to different work positions. In the light of the challenges of the Industry 4.0 the weight of safety and health, and ergonomics are rising. Nowadays one of the common problem in industry are work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs). Therefore, an ergonomic risk evaluation is crucial as well the knowledge and education in this area. This paper presents a computerized tool for ergonomic education on ergonomic risk evaluation at the workplace. The tool based on quick exposure check pen and paper technique and Excel spreadsheet environment. It is easy to use and assists students in the evaluation of real as well of simulated workplaces. The proposed tool includes a few integrated parts: background description, students - observer’s and worker’s evaluation and results with visual interpretation. The preliminary evaluation of the Excel tool was carried out by students. It showed that it is useful and easy in use. And the students' opinions on the computerized tool for ergonomic risk evaluation are very encouraging and promise what was presented in this study.

Application of Model-Based Tests for Analysing the Consequences of Mine Fires

One of the most common and most dangerous hazards in underground coal mines is fire hazard. Mine fires can be exogenous or endogenous in nature. In the case of the former, a particular hazard is posed by methane fires that occur in dog headings and longwalls. Endogenous and exogenous fires are large hazard for working crew in mining headings and cause economics losses for mining plants. Mine fires result in emission of harmful chemical products and have a crucial impact on the physical parameters of the airflow. The subject of the article concerns the analysis of the consequences of methane fires in dog headings. These consequences were identified by means of model-based tests. For this purpose, a model was developed and boundary conditions were adopted to reflect the actual layout of the headings and the condition of the atmosphere in the area under analysis. The objective of the test was to determine the effects of methane fires on the chemical composition of the atmosphere and the physical parameters of the gas mixture generated in the process. The results obtained clearly indicate that fires have a significant impact on the above-mentioned values. The paper presents the distributions for the physical parameters of the resulting gas mixture and the concentration of fire gases. Moreover, it shows the distributions of temperature and oxygen concentration levels in the headings under analysis. The methodology developed for the application of model-based tests to analyse fire events in mine headings represents a new approach to the problem of investigating the consequences of such fires. It is also suitable for variant analyses of the processes related to the ventilation of underground mine workings as well as for analyses of emergency states. Model-based tests should support the assessment of the methane hazard levels and, subsequently, lead to an improvement of work safety in mines.

IT Systems Supporting Waste Management in Municipalities – Research Results

Abstract

When a new EU directive on municipal waste management was implemented in Poland over 5 years ago, there were practically no IT systems on the market allowing for comprehensive support of this process. Significant changes revealed a number of problems that the municipalities had to face and are facing today, trying to create an integrated system of waste management. IT systems used by municipal units before the amendment of the act have been proved insufficient to be able to efficiently manage the collection of waste from residents. The new regulations significantly influenced, among others, the process of information flow between entities in the waste management system. New participants in the municipal waste management process have been introduced, which from that moment has had to be dealt with by municipal units - the entire organization of the waste collection process and information activities in this area fell on the municipalities. This article presents the results of research on IT systems used in municipalities and its needs in this area. These surveys were carried out using a questionnaire sent to municipalities in the Silesian Voivodeship. Its aim was to identify the features and functions that should be met by the IT system, allowing for comprehensive management of the new municipal waste management system.

Unstandardized LCA-Based Technology Sustainability Assessment for Alternative Energy Scenarios for Cogeneration System

Abstract

In pursuit of higher energy savings and de-carbonization, greater fuel diversity and lower pollutant emission is possible by production processes through energy-savings opportunities and associated environmentally-benign technologies. Current production processes represents the biggest consumption of energy, and the greatest amount of emissions emitted to the environment. Improvement in energy efficiency is considered as the basic principle in realizing energy-saving, bringing cost-effective benefits and reduction of greenhouse emissions. Hence, this study proposes a framework to assess alternative sustainability of cogeneration systems, integrating the economic, environmental, and social indicators. The results showed that the cogeneration system with a new boiler with a 600 PSIG pressure and a new turbine seems to be a cost-efficient solution compared to the baseline scenario saving energy at the level of 1,823,072 kWh/yr (63%) against the baseline scenario. In the case study, the implemented solution in the plant improved the overall sustainability degree of technology by 53% (from 46% as baseline to 97%).

Environmental Efficiency of Industrial Symbiosis – LCA Case Study for Gypsum Exchange

A review of the available literature concerning environmental impact assessment for industrial symbiosis has been carried out. The authors have recommended the use of life cycle assessment method for this purpose. It was stated that so far few studies presenting LCA results of industrial symbiosis have been published. Among the factors which contribute to the success of symbiotic exchange, the close location of collaborating companies has been often mentioned. This paper presents LCA results concerning the environmental impact of symbiotic gypsum transmission. Concepts of relative distance and critical distance for the case of industrial symbiosis were proposed and defined. Significant difference between critical distance obtained for particular endpoints were observed (3.5- 564 km). Application of Life Cycle Sustainability Triangle enabled the estimation of critical distance taking into account various impact categories. A sensitivity analysis indicated the relationship between critical distance and the means of transport which reflected the effect of scale. The critical distance determined for heavy trucks was 3.2 - 3.9 times longer than in case of lighter vehicles.

Analysis of the Scale of Methane Hazard in Polish Hard Coal Mines

Abstract

In the majority of Polish mines, the exploitation of hard coal is accompanied by the release of considerable amounts of methane. Being flammable and explosive, methane may form an explosive mixture with air once it appears in mine workings. For this reason, the methane hazard is recognised as one of the ventilation risks in the mining industry. This process leads to the formation of air and methane mixture, whose considerable amounts permeate into the atmosphere and the natural environment. This phenomenon is extremely unfavourable because methane is, besides carbon dioxide, yet another gas that exacerbates the greenhouse effect. For this reason, it is increasingly more common to equip mines with methane collection systems in the process of demethylation. These play a vital role for both the natural environment and the safety of work in mines. A reduction of the methane content in headings increases the safety of the working crew and enhances the effectiveness of mining production. The article presents an analysis of the methane-related hazard based on methane emissions during mining exploitation. The analysis was based on the data concerning the amount of methane emitted into the atmosphere and collected by methane extraction systems from 16 coal mines. It led to identification of homogenous mines with similar values of the absolute methane-bearing capacity and ventilation methane-bearing capacity as well as with similar amounts of methane collected by methane extraction systems. The analysis was performed using the non-hierarchical k-average method, which belongs to the group of algorithms for analysing clusters. As a result, the mines were divided into the assumed number of groups. The results obtained made it possible to determine a group of mines in which, in the Author’s opinion, similar systems can be applied for controlling and reducing the methane hazard. These results also open up numerous possibilities for undertaking joint business ventures by the mines in terms of using the collected methane and implementing preventive measures.

The Relationship between Environmental Uncertainty and Enterprise Performance. A Fuzzy-Set Analysis

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore causal complexity in the relationship between environmental uncertainty and firm’s performance. Due to complexity in the external and internal environment, the relationship between environment and firm performance rests not only on a single attribute but on the interrelation and complementarities between multiple characteristics such as firm features and external factors. This study examines the influence of a firm’s specific characteristics and the dimensions of environmental uncertainty on the company’s performance. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis is used to analyze data collected via questionnaires from 58 Polish small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The results suggest that characteristics of the general business environment, as well as the firm-specific characteristics all matter to firm performance. In addition, our findings clearly demonstrate that the determination of high firm performance is underpinned by substantial interdependence among the selected conditions and complexity. Therefore, any particular condition may have a different or even opposite effect on the outcome depending on the presence or absence of other conditions. Based on this, we conclude that external environmental uncertainty characteristics, with the dimensions of competitive intensity, technological turbulence and market/demand turbulence, are not as important as the other conditions for high-performing firms. The study offers a new perspective on the relationship between environmental uncertainty and firm performance with its systematic comparative analysis of complex cases. It identifies different combinations of conditions (paths) leading to a high firm performance.

Comparative Analysis of Danger Zone Ranges Determined for LNG in the Coastal Area

Abstract

The analysis of danger zone ranges for LNG in the coastal area is an important task on account of, inter alia, the safety of human life. It is not an easy process, which is why we consider an danger situation for various weather conditions in the function of constant wind speeds and for various wind speeds in constant weather stability. Pasquill weather stability scale and Beaufort scale with regard to terrain roughness were adopted for the analysis. Both scenarios were considered in the example of Q-flex type vessels in the Świnoujście terminal for two methods of LNG release, i.e. related to a sudden explosion and slow release caused by a leak. The analysis was conducted and considered for the values in the top and bottom flammability limit. Modelling of the danger zone range was analysed with DNV PHAST software, version 7.11. In the process of comparison of the situation related to the risk of explosion in the function of various weather stabilities according to Pasquill scale and constant wind speeds, the values of 1.5 m/s and 5 m/s were adopted, corresponding to 1 and 3 wind force on the Beaufort scale. Those speeds correspond to the water conditions featuring tiny ripples and small waves, the crests of which start to break. The adopted weather stabilities analysed for wind speed equal to 1.5 m/s are A, B, D. A-type stability signifies the least stable atmospheric conditions, and D-type means neutral conditions. In turn, for the wind speed of 5 m/s B, D and F parameters in Pasquill scale were selected. Furthermore, ranges for variable wind speed values were analysed for the selected Pasquill stability.

Analysis of Sustainable Production Practices Implemented by Car Manufacturers

Companies are increasingly implementing sustainable solutions as they face a growing sustainability demands from different stakeholders. The question is whether car manufacturers adhered to sustainable production principles and at what level they are doing it in practice. The Lowell Center for Sustainable Production (LCSP) is used as a model to analyse the main aspects of sustainable production and assess the companies in the automotive sector in European Union. The data was collected from the Corporate Social Responsibility/ Sustainability reports of the individual car manufacturers found in the online data base of Global Reporting Initiative. Empirical evidence shows the adherence of these companies to the LCSP sustainable production principles. All the studied companies seem to be conscious of the significance of sustainability for the automotive industry. Although most of the sustainable production practices are focused on the environmental dimension of sustainability, employee and social aspects are not ignored in the reports.

Towards Smart City: Influence of Air Pollution on the Local Community of the Zabrze City in Surveys and Field Research

The results of the conducted pilot research indicated the basic local problems of the residents of Zabrze city. The purpose of the next research was to answer the question: how to improve the quality of life of residents in a city with significant air pollution. Activities aimed at this goal are inscribed in the idea of "smart city". The article presents the results of pilot measurements of air pollution with toxic gases in the Zabrze city in the Silesian agglomeration (Poland). Field studies at selected locations in the city concerned measurements of nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide. The aim of these studies was to identify areas of the city with significant air pollution with toxic gases in order to plan further detailed research. Made measurements showed the appearance of the local problem of accumulation of pollutants in several areas of the city. The results obtained were compared with surveys conducted among residents of the Zabrze city. The aim of the survey was to examine the respondents' awareness of: the location of areas with noticeable air pollution and health problems resulting from air pollution in the place of residence. The article also presents a plan of possible actions for the city of Zabrze within the framework of the "smart city" idea to improve the quality of life of the local city community in conditions of increased emission of gas pollution in the city.

Optimizing the Use of Human Resources in Industrial-Service Enterprises

Abstract

The optimal use of resources available in the enterprise is important regardless of the size of the company and the industry in which it operates. Enterprises are therefore forced constantly to make alternative choices related to the allocation of available resources and to optimize these choices. The article addresses the problem of the approach to optimizing the use of human resources particularly, the use of extra employee qualifications e.g., manual skills, pressure resistance, work precision, the ability to read schematic diagrams, etc. in the context of technical requirements for a given task. This is extremely important in the situation when subsequent works are individual and the conditions in which they will be performed, cannot be predicted in 100%, they may differ from those that have been implemented so far, and at the same time numerous orders of various nature are being implemented. In this situation, an accurate prediction of the requirements posed by new tasks and the appropriate selection of teams executing them can have an impact on the effectiveness of the task completion process. In the article, this problem is presented on the example of a medium-sized service enterprise operating in the industry-related sector operating basically on tender procedures and tender contests. The works are carried out on the customer's premises, often with new customers or in new field conditions. Thus, the success of the undertaking depends mainly on the optimal selection of employees with appropriate qualifications and competences. The example of an investment task is used to show a method of identifying characteristics relevant to the task as well as selection of employees in order to use the capabilities of human teams better. Technical aspects of task implementation and an employees team selection with regard to the absolutely required technical qualifications as well as the behavioral and physical skills necessary for its implementation are taken into account. The described method can be used for future tasks regardless of the changing conditions of their implementation. The intention of the authors is to develop a tool supporting the decision-making process in this area, so that it can also be used by managers with lower technical competences.

As part of this article, research work aimed at acquiring new knowledge regarding the analysis and assessment of arbitrarily selected gerontechnology: personal care robots for older adults. The results planned to be achieved under the article have not been reflected in previous scientific studies. Until now, no research has been carried out to assess this technology regarding heterogeneous criteria. The existing research results only concern the study of the acceptability of the technologies used by older people to improve their quality of life. The opinions of prospective potential users were not considered as well as their age and place of posting or education. Neither were marketing, social and ethical aspects, competitiveness or innovation. The author will use the proprietary methodology of prospective technology analysis (PAT) to analyse and evaluate the technology. This methodology allows assessing the current state of technology. It enables providing knowledge on characteristic features of the technology, current and potential applications of a given technology and necessary for the development of analysed resource technologies, as well as the impact of technology on the environment and the environment on technology.

Trust in Technology in Case of Humanoids Used for the Care for the Senior Persons

The dynamics of demographic changes manifested in the processes of an ageing population affect Poland.In response to the situation, gerontechnology is emerging as an interdisciplinary field of scientific research in which technology is directed towards the aspirations and opportunities of the older persons. One of the examples of technologies that will be able to support the ageing population in the future are humanoids, that is, robots resembling a human being and equipped with artificial intelligence. The purpose of this article was to examine relationships between trust in the use of humanoids to care for the older people, the usefulness of technology, the ease of use, perceived threats, general trust and trust in science and technology. A survey method was used to collect data for research. The electronic questionnaire survey was disseminated among members of the Polish society. 643 filled questionnaires were received.

Musculoskeletal complaints represent a common occupational problem for health care workers throughout the world. This study provides shortened results of review by Nordic Questionnaire, which was modified for review reasons. The aim of the study is verification of work-related load Slovak and Polish nurses in their work and mutual comparison of the results. Comparison of statistical sample of Slovak nurses (468) and Polish nurses (48 for this moment) points to certain common features in the field of pain and the determination of their causes. Verification of the knowledge base of nurses in the field of ergonomics, principles of manipulation of load and kinestetika shows slightly better results for Polish nurses. The study will continue to compare larger statistical samples, identify the most common pains and their causes to the reason prevent them.

Use of Transformer Multi-Level Inverters in Parallel Operation of Marine Generating Sets with PMSG

The increase of energy efficiency in autonomous marine generating sets improves the overall efficiency of the ship’s propulsion. One of the methods to increase the efficiency of generating sets is the use of synchronous machines with permanent magnets in sets as generators (PMSG). The use of PMSG in connected with the need to install power converters in order to maintain constant parameters of the supply voltage and the possibility of reactive power’s distribution between generating sets that work in parallel. The article presents the possibility of using transformer multi-level inverters in parallel operation of marine generating sets with PMSG. On the basis of the results of simulation tests, the theoretical assumptions for the possibilities of active and passive power adjustment in the parallel operation of generating sets were confirmed.

Spreading of Cracks Due to Thermal Fatigue in Metal Molds

Abstract

The article deals with the formation and spread of cracks from thermal fatigue in metallic forms. For a detailed examination of the problem, it is necessary to describe the thermal side of the process and the mechanism of mechanical stressing of the material. For the heating of the material is valid where the thermal diffusivity of the material is exercised by the decision method. The stress of the material by heating from the die casting metal depends mainly on the physical properties of the material when the calculated stress does not exceed the yield point. Also, with the help of dislocations write the life to the origin of the cracks in the cycles eventually the share of this lifetime on the total lifetime in dependence on the mechanical and physical properties of the material. During operation tests the occurrence of the cracks on the mold surface was initiated by the inclusion or concentration of stress in the knurling effect of fine grooves after grinding. Other cracks occurred in the undersurface layer and their direction was statistically accidental.

Problems of Friction Force Measurement between Cylindrical Outdoor and Internal Slide Parts

Abstract

The article presents the determination of an exemplary measure in the assessment of the technical state of sets of mechanical objects at the stage of manufacture, use and maintenance. The technical state of the assemblies is influenced by the quality of the friction-cooperating elements, the quality of basic functions, the surroundings and the diameter clearance of kinematic node components. Energy wasted to overcome the frictional resistance is a significant part of the energy supplied, which is why current friction losses are minimized. The article includes analysis of the phenomena occurring in the cylindrical pairs in the presence of static and kinetic friction. The many factors affecting the course and values of friction force between cylindrical elements performing relative reciprocating motion have been indicated. The subject of the article is the method of measuring the friction force between a fixed and movable cylindrical element of the mechanical object. The gradual increase of the friction force component takes place by means of easily accessible force. The results of experimental tests of the friction force in different laboratory conditions under are also included. The effect on the measured friction force was investigated: of friction elements geometry and the surface condition after manufacture and/or operation. Scatter results of static friction force depending on the geometry and surface state can be significant. Examples of surface state images are shown. A friction force model was also developed depending on factors affecting its value.

Analysis of Corners Milling of Aluminum Alloy Elements

Abstract

The article presents comparative research on the effects of milling of concave corners of elements made of aluminum alloy 7075. The work focuses on the study of the impact of changes in technological parameters and types of machining on the obtained geometrical state of the machined samples. Correct milling of the corners requires selection of the appropriate feed rate and the proper engagement angle of the milling cutter. At the corners, tool engagement angle increases, which significantly hinders the execution of stable machining and adversely affects the geometric and qualitative characteristics of the surface in the corners. Study with application of various strategies and technological parameters of milling corners with variable opening angles were carried out. The main parameters of surface roughness of the machined elements were examined. When analyzing the results obtained, conclusions were formulated indicating the relationship between the change of selected technological parameters, with the assumed type of treatment, and the obtained quality parameters of the samples made.

Influence of Pressure Equalisation Elements on the Quality of Insulating Glass Units

Continuous increase of expectations concerning improvement in quality of building partitions by means of increasing their thermal insulation properties brings, among others, a need of modification in standards that have been applied to the double glazed windows so far. Triple-glazed and quadruple-glazed IGUs are used more and more often. Such elements have better thermal properties, but they are more prone to deflection and stress resulting from climatic load, i.e. changes in temperature, atmospheric pressure and wind load. Due to the above certain concepts occurred that consist in equalising gas pressure in the gas-filled gaps with the atmospheric pressure. The article contains assessment of such solutions in the context of providing suitable technical parameters of glass panes: thermal insulation and susceptibility to climatic load. It was stated that the pressure-equalizing elements (capillaries) can result in a significant reduction in the quality of the glass partition in the event of the argon purging chamber or damage to the low-E emissions. The lower risk of using required thermal properties occurs when periodically active valves are used, they operate only in case of extreme pressure level differences. Further analysis concerned the idea of pressure equalisation between the gaps of a triple-glazed unit, as that can be done by using an edge spacer of appropriate design. On the basis of comparative analysis of static values it was shown that it is a reasonable solution. Such a unit maintains the properties of a tight unit, while the possibility of gas exchange between the gaps leads to relief of the central glass pane in the unit, thus allowing for decreasing its thickness to 2 mm.

Abstrakt

Abstract

Dynamically changing conditions of business activity, rapid development of new technologies, increasing intensity of competition, progressing globalisation pose for entrepreneurs new, much more difficult principles than before, especially due to the increase of intensity and complexity of the environment. It is reflected in the necessity of continuous improvement of processes and their quick reorganisation. The aim of the article is to present research conducted in metallurgical enterprise. In the article individual stages of heat treatment process, taking into consideration complications, errors and quality defects of the product arising at the stage of manufacturing the product were described. In order to minimize resulting defects, quality improvement system was implemented, using, among others Ishikawa diagram. In view of the fact that the world stands on the threshold of next industrial revolution, directions of improvement of heat treatment process in the context of Industry 4.0 were indicated.

Design and Modeling of an Experimental Hydraulic Device

Abstrakt

Abstract

The design of the experimental laboratory device is based on the construction of the hydraulic circuits of mobile devices. It is possible to ensure the repeatability of the flow characteristic measurements at the laboratory. This means that in the operating test it is possible to verify the flow characteristics of the hydraulic pump and these results are not affected by the change in the physical properties of the applied liquid. By comparing of the flow characteristics directly on the work equipment (mini-excavator, etc.), the disadvantage is the need for dismantling the hydraulic pump and its mounting on the laboratory device. In some working device removal is not possible, where dismantling is structurally difficult or is time consuming, which increases the cost of their operation.The proposed experimental laboratory device serves to verify the flow characteristics of the hydraulic pump and is also designed to be universal, to test external gear hydraulic pump and hydraulic pump with inclined plate.

Design of Grinding Machine Spindle

Abstract

When grinding high demands are usually placed on the geometrical tolerances of the workpiece surface. For this reason, the spindles of the grinding machines are normally designed with requirements for a minimum position change of the grinding disks due to external forces and bending moments. The design theory of these spindles is relatively well elaborated, as it represents the most frequently used solution in practice. However, there are also cases where it is necessary to grind some hard-to-reach areas, using a great ejection of the spindle. In these cases, it is necessary to reassess the required geometrical tolerances with regard to its necessity to comply with the minimal changes in the position of the grinding discs due to the great ejection. Where it is necessary to maintain high geometrical tolerances, it is necessary to ensure a greater rigidity of the spindle. This rigidity is usually improved by increasing its diameter. By doing this we also increase the weight of the spindle that is heavily ejected, and thus its deformation can occur due to gravity forces. That is why it is necessary to analyse the deflection of the spindle depending on its ejection in the course of its design. In the case we increase the diameter of the grinder spindle the possible applicable grinding disc diameter decreases, due to the growing size of its housing. Any grinding of hard-to-reach surfaces is therefore done in particular to improve the quality of the surface with low requirements on the geometrical tolerances. This article deals with the design patterns for a spindle used in axial grinding for inner rotating surfaces. The article contains a spindle design solution and an analysis of its deflections, depending on its ejection, and the size of the passive forces.

Practical Aspects of Event Logs Creation for Industrial Process Modelling

Abstract

In the paper we address the challenge of applying process mining techniques for discovering models of underground mining operations based on a sensor data. The paper presents practical approach of creation an event log based on industrial sensors data gathered in an underground mine monitoring systems. The proposed approach enables to generate event logs at different generalization levels based on several numbers of discovered stages of devices performance. For discovering process stages data mining techniques such as exploratory data analysis, clustering and classification have been applied. Created event log has been used in one of the process mining tasks - process model discovery.

Quality Control in Aerosol Production

Abstract

Aerosol products are present in different industries including cosmetic, technical, household and many more. These products are subject to number of controls both at the pre-production, in-process and post-production stages. Controls at the pre-production stage relate to checking the conformity of individual components that make up the aerosol packaging, as well as raw materials that are used to create the formula. The checks carried out during the production process are mainly focused on the verification of parameters at particular stages of production. Whereas, post-production checks are related to the evaluation of the finished product. Due to the highest share of metal packaging in the aerosol products market, such products are the subject of this article.

Analysis of Device Failure in the Mechanical Production Plant

Abstract

The article evaluates the failure rate of devices in the Mechanical Processing Plant using a traditional quality tool, the Pareto-Lorenzo diagram. A comparative analysis of failure rates was performed, recorded in repair, inspection and maintenance card. Then, changes were proposed in order to reduce failure rates and earlier detection of equipment malfunctions. In order to analyze the failure rate of grain washer equipment during thick coal preparation process, one quality management tools was used - the Pareto-Lorenzo diagram. In this case, it is important to assess the mechanical failure of devices, and demonstrating which devices generate most repairs. Based on materials made available by the mine, such as: Repair, inspection and maintenance cards, Device cards, DTR documentation. Quantitative and qualitative assessment the most frequently occurring mechanical failures during operation of devices in process enrichment of coarse sizes was carried out. An attempt was made to assess failure rate of devices on a grain washer. A comparative analysis of failure rates in 2015-2017 recorded in the repair, inspection and maintenance card was carried out. Then, changes were proposed to stand, in order reduce failure rates, and earlier detection equipment malfunctions.

Influence of Constructional and Kinematic Parameters of the New Solution of Roadheader Mining Head on the Effectiveness of its Work

Abstract

The paper presents a new solution of a mining head for roadheader designed for hard and very hard rock mining. The mining head was equipped with mini disk tools with a complex trajectory. The results of field tests were presented, under which the effectiveness of the new mining head solution was observed. The load and vibrations of the mining head, dustiness and grain size of the excavated material as well as disk tool wear were measured. These tests were carried out for various constructional and material parameters of the used asymmetrical mini disk tools and kinematic parameters of the mining head.

Literature Research in the Field of Technology Assessment Using a Tool of a Systematic Literature Review

Abstrakt

Abstract

The article presents the results of literature research in the field of Technology Assessment (TA). In particular, the attention was focused on searching for trends determining the directions of development of this research area. Research gaps constituting the basis for undertaking new cognitive challenges were identified. As a research method, a systematic review of literature was adopted, the methodology of which was described in the first part of the article. The analysis includes a total of 1788 TA-related scientific articles available in Google Scholar and BazTech databases. The practical part of the article presents fragments of literature research and an attempt to define the concepts of Technology Assessment on their basis. The collected research material showed a high degree of variation in the scope of definitions and the research area covered by TA. This indicates the need to conduct further research in this area for the purpose of clarifying the research area which TA deals with. It is legitimate to say that the development of research in this area is necessary due to the increasing impact of technology on society.

Measurement of Forces During the Extraction Process

Abstract

The article briefly describes the factors affecting the workability of coal seams. Next, the construction and principle of operation of a globally unique device for determining the values of forces involved in the cutting process (coal extraction) named POU-BW/01-WAP by the author were presented. It is the only device in the world that determines two of the three component forces that are involved in the cutting process. To this end, two independent measuring blocks were used, which consist of tensometric force sensors: cutting (Fs) and pick downforce (Fd). To register these forces, a real pick was used, which is used in longwall drum shearers - a conical pick. The device has ATEX certification that allows working in real conditions, as a device intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres - in accordance with Directive 94/9/EC. The instrument has received many awards at global inventiveness and innovative solution trade shows.

Analysis of Weldings’ Incompatibility in Constructions

Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of the causes and consequences of nonconformity that has been made in the welding of structural elements. The most frequent incompatibilities in this process were identified and RPN determined for them. The implementation of corrective and preventive actions in the identified critical areas was suggested based on the conducted analysis. After the implementation of corrective actions the re-calculation of the value of the RPN has been made. The paper presents the importance of visual inspection in the process of supervising finished products from the construction welding process. Elements of selected processes carried out in welded structures over two months were analyzed.

Monitoring the Quality of Laser Cutting

Abstract

In engineering industry the production of components begins with separation of the base material and this technological operation can be time consuming, especially in large-scale production. Such production can be made more efficient by means of laser technology focusing on material cutting. Efficiency of cutting is determined not only by shortening of working time or energy saving, but also by the required cutting quality. In the paper we compare the impact of cutting speed changing and laser beam performance on the cutting edge quality. Based on requirements of dimensional accuracy and preset roughness of the cutting edge, we evaluated the cutting quality of laser in samples of different materials. Measured values of sample dimensions and roughness are compared in conclusions of the paper, where we estimate whether the samples meet specified requirements of dimensional accuracy and roughness of the cutting edge in order to make the production process more efficient.

Analysis of the Impact of Unscheduled Downtimes on their Availability in Machine Operations

Abstract

Unscheduled downtimes in machine operation are one of the main reasons behind their low availability. Such downtimes are caused by miscellaneous factors and remain difficult to identify in a number of cases. This particularly refers to enterprises that conduct their activities in changing external conditions, such as hard coal mines, where exploitation is carried out in extremely complicated, changeable and dangerous conditions. The process of coal production makes use of various machines that must be adapted to these conditions. The specificity of the working environment makes it necessary for these machines to exhibit high reliability, readiness and efficiency. These features, in turn, make the cost of the machines very high. It is therefore reasonable to make the best use of their capabilities, which translates into the effectiveness of the entire production process. The article concentrates on determining the availability of these machines. It has been assumed that availability is one of the fundamental parameters that define the effective utilisation of machines. The tests were conducted for a longwall shearer as well as an armoured face conveyor and a main haulage conveyor in one of the hard coal mines in Poland. Industrial automation systems were used to determine unscheduled downtimes in the operation of these machines, as well as their time structure and causes. The results obtained indicate that the number of unscheduled downtimes represents a serious problem in mining exploitation.

Laboratory Tests of a Speed Control System for Roadheader Cutting Heads

Abstract

The paper presents selected results of the laboratory tests of the speed control system for the R-130 roadheader with an inverter-fed cutting heads drive. The results recorded for the variable speed system have been compared with the measurement obtained for the network supplied drive. There have been noticed some oscillations after rapid current overloads. They are due to the operation of the internal current controller of the PWM-inverter, The oscillations are fast decaying - so they prove the results of initial system stability checking. Generally, the automatic speed control, tracking the optimum speed level calculating by supervisory speed adjuster makes possible to better utilize the motor power throughout the whole cutting time. The better operating conditions of the motor cause increase in the whole system power efficiency (even in spite of additional losses in the inverter circuit) Additionally the sped control reduces dynamical overloads. This fact can have a positive influence on the whole system reliability. The speed control subsystem is a part of the whole control system which contains also close-loop boom angular position and velocity control circuits.

A Comparative Analysis of the Impact of CNC Miller Programming on Machining Effects

Abstract

This paper presents a comparison of the impact of the programming methods of a CNC miller on the machining effects. As a part of the study, the test samples were made of the EN AW-2024 aluminium alloy. The CNC machining programs compared were developed with two programming methods: by inputting the CNC machining program directly from the CNC miller's control panel (machine level programming) and in a CAM software environment (CAM programming). The machining effect indicators adopted included: machining time, surface quality, and dimensional deviation of specific geometrical features. A measurement of the machining times revealed than the CAM programming reduced the machining time up to 20% from the machining time of the machine level programming. A conclusion stands valid that CNC machining programs developed in the CAM software environment are more efficient than CNC programming directly with the CNC miller control panel, most likely due to the machining path optimisation in CAM. In addition, given the experimental test results, it was found that smaller machined errors were also obtained for CAM programming. To conclude, the comparative analysis revealed that CAM programming provided better machining results than the machine level programming.

Carbide Milling Cutter Blades Durability during Machining of AL-SI Casting Alloy

Abstract

The paper presents results of wear measurements of carbide shank milling cutters during machining of AlSi10Mg casting alloy. The comparison was made between blades wear of milling cutters without protective coating, with TiB2 coating, and with TiAlCN coating. All cutters had identical geometry dedicated to milling of materials of ISO N group. To assess blades wear degree, measurement of two direct indicators, i.e. VBC and VBBmax, and one indirect indicator, i.e. machined surfaces roughness, were used. Received results allowed to determine usefulness of using selected protective coatings in machining of aluminium alloys, especially Al-Si casting alloys.

Assessment of the Range of Danger Zones Determined in a Function of LNG Chemical Composition

Abstract

Nowadays, when we try to automatize all activities, there is a growing demand for energy in all forms. Increasingly we reach for new energy sources that can be problematic to store or to transport, owing to their toxicity or explosive propensity. The article examines the issues of determining danger zones occurring as a result of liquefied natural gas (LNG) release. The range of danger zones caused through LNG release depends on a multitude of factors. The basic parameter that needs to be considered is a type of the released substance as well as the manner of its release. The range of a danger zone is determined by, inter alia, the concentration of a released substance and the atmospheric conditions existing at the time when depressurization occurs. The article analyses the problem of the range of danger zones in a function of wind speed and surface roughness with a defined value of Pasquill stability for various LNG types, starting with pure methane, and ending with the so-called LNG-heavy. The difficulty of the task becomes more complicated when the analysed surface over which a depressurization incident takes place involves water. The problem deepens even further when the analysed substance possesses explosive properties. Then, apart from regular substance concentration, upper and lower flammability limit ought to be considered. Calculations were conducted with DNV-Phast software, version 7.11.

Applying Harmonic Analysis in the Measurements of Geometrical Deviations of Crankshafts – Roundness Shapes Analysis

Abstract

The article presents measuring procedures and principles of determining deviations of shape and location of the crankshaft main necks assembly axis. We also described mathematical methods of roundness shapes description based on the harmonic analysis theory for the cases when the shaft is set with the external journals in prisms and for the case when the shaft is set on the external front faces in the claws. The results of sample calculations realized on the basis of the proposed mathematical methods have been presented in a form of diagrams of so called amplitude spectrum and in a graphic form of roundness shapes expressed in a polar coordinate system. The procedures described find a practical use during measurements of geometrical deviations of crankshafts realized on the basis of a measuring system with so called flexible support of the measured object.

Applying Harmonic Analysis in the Measurements of Geometrical Deviations of the Crankshafts – Selecting Support Conditions

Abstract

The article presents principles of the most suitable support conditions which enable elimination of deflections and elastic deformations of crankshafts under their self-weight. On the basis of the formulated principles sample calculations of force values of support reactions were performed. This guarantees zero value of deflections on main journals depending on the angle of rotation of the shaft, applying available programme of strength calculations Nastran FX 2010. The obtained results have been approximated with a mathematical equation applying the calculating method based on the harmonic analysis theory. Then a comparative assessment of the force diagram (the forces were obtained via strength calculations and mathematical model including so called mutual inter-correlation coefficient) was made. The obtained results of comparative analysis showed high correspondence between the compared diagrams. Presented procedures of determining the required forces ensuring elimination of deflections and elastic deformations can be applied to measurements of crankshaft geometrical deviations realized on the basis of a measuring system with, so called, flexible support of a measured object.

Identification Accuracy of Additional Wave Resistance Through a Comparison of Multiple Regression and Artificial Neural Network Methods

Abstract

The article presents the use of multiple regression method to identify added wave resistance. Added wave resistance was expressed in the form of a four-state nominal function of: “thrust”, “zero”, “minor” and “major” resistance values. Three regression models were developed for this purpose: a regression model with linear variables, nonlinear variables and a large number of nonlinear variables. The nonlinear models were developed using the author's algorithm based on heuristic techniques. The three models were compared with a model based on an artificial neural network. This study shows that non-linear equations developed through a multiple linear regression method using the author’s algorithm are relatively accurate, and in some respects, are more effective than artificial neural networks.

Applying the Anticipatory Failure Determination at a Very Early Stage of a System’S Development: Overview and Case Study

Abstract

Anticipatory Failure Determination (AFD) is a tool used in the TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) methodology. This article introduces its concept and describes the process of AFD in different versions of the method. The article presents the application of the AFD method at a very early state of a system’s development, i.e. its concept formulation stage, which corresponds to a technology readiness level (TRL) equal to 2. The system under analysis is a set of devices used to reduce displacement ship hull resistance. The system was modelled using functional analysis. An analysis of system resources was then carried out. Possible direct, indirect, and accident-related failures were identified. A multi-criteria analysis of the causes of system failures was conducted from which the top 10 potential failures were selected. Observations were made on the applicability of AFD in respect to systems not yet implemented.

Abstract

The paper deals with the use of Lean Manufacturing tools in improving the production process of car arm rests in a car manufacturing company in Poland. The article describes the original condition of a single production process of assembling ready pieces to produce car arm rests. The original condition was assessed and described with the use of some basic Lean indicators and value stream mapping. The aforementioned tools allowed to assess the process condition and to identify the organizational issues and their sources. It also enabled to reorganize the process and increase its efficiency. The further part of the article describes the results of improvement actions. The process assessment was held and improvements introduced in the first quarter of 2018.

Tests of an Innovative Controller Designed to Control the Powered Roof Support

Abstract

The article presents the methodology and results of tests of a prototype controller designed for the electrohydraulic control system of a powered roof support. This controller is the basic part of the developed, innovative control system. The tests were carried out on a custom-designed testing station, equipped with one section of a roof support. The aim of the research was to check the functionality and speed of the controller's response while working with the actual support section. The tested controller and the control system has a modular structure, which greatly facilitates its operation and use. Measurements of control functions were carried out on the controller connected to the electrohydraulic control block. The research mainly focused on determining the period starting from the moment of providing the signal to the moment of switching on the basic functions performed by the support section. The obtained results confirm the assumptions made. The controller's operation is very stable, and its response times are very short. It can therefore be assumed that the tested controller is correctly designed and constructed. This creates great possibilities for its practical application in the built-in system for controlling the roof support. This may be particularly important in the case of high-efficiency longwall complexes, for which wireless control of the support is planned to be used. The presented research methodology and obtained results should therefore be an important source of information in the field of testing controllers for powered roof supports.
