Evaluation and Development of Urban Rivers with Active Public Involvement

Published Online: 31 Mar 2007
Page range: 93 - 108

Abstract

Abtract

Urban development and socio-cultural aspects have so far been mostly considered insufficiently in the evaluation and development of urban rivers. Suitable evaluation procedures for the determination of deficits and potentials are missing. In the framework of the project “Urban Water Bodies” in Freiburg evaluation elements were therefore developed which also register urban development and socio-cultural aspects such as the quality of experience and of the stay in addition to the conventional eco-morphological factors. These evaluation elements were successfully tested at two rivers in Freiburg. Deficits and development potentials were identified. These formed the basis for a participator planning process which was initiated in the framework of the project and which was accompanied by experts. Together with citizens, experts and representatives from public authorities numerous suggestions for the revaluation of the two previously evaluated water bodies in ecological and urban development terms were elaborated. The participation process was evaluated in the sense of action research.

Political governance and goal perspectives of a socially integrative urban development in the state of Brandenburg

Published Online: 31 Mar 2007
Page range: 109 - 121

Abstract

Summary

Urban policies – no matter whether on a communal, regional or national level – are characterized by forward-looking, forward-planning procedures. Self-critical reflections on the effects or the efficiency of already implemented policies are in general speaking not very common. Two reasons are often mentioned. On the one hand profound methodical problems can make evaluations of urban policies very complicated. On the other hand if there do exist evaluation-reports they are often left out of consideration for the ongoing planning of new urban policies for lack of time. Based on empirical studies and evaluations in the state of Brandenburg this article wants to discuss consequences for the control and management of integrated urban developing policies.
