Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds immense potential for enhancing prosperity. However, the adoption of AI in German businesses remains limited, with only 19 % of companies utilizing AI in 2022. The successful implementation of AI relies on two key prerequisites: a company’s digitalisation and data economy readiness. The Digitalisation Index reveals slow progress in digitalisation across sectors, indicating a need for increased efforts. Additionally, companies must enhance their data economy readiness to efficiently utilize data for AI applications. Failing to tap into the potential of AI may result in significant competitive disadvantages in the future.

In contrast to other sectors, such as air traffic, the transition towards CO2-neutral mobility in the car sector is within reach, but there is still a long way to go. Now the question arises: What role does e-mobility play in Germany today and in the future? The authors analyse the importance of the model policy in the various market segments, the price development, and the framework conditions as levers for the ramp-up of e-mobility. The article further examines why synthetic fuels will not be able to play any significant role in the decarbonisation of the passenger car sector in the near future. Although the electric car has become mainstream, the conditions for a flourishing market must be created.

Artificial intelligence defines a new age of technological and economic progress, but also causes disruptive effects on business models, industries, and the society in general. It is argued that in order to make AI a productive and progressive technology regulatory as well as educational requirements must first be matched. Threats and opportunities must be weighed up in advance. Given the coincidence of geo-political shift and industrial transformation, becoming a leading and competitive player in the game of AI is key for the German and European economy. In order to do so, AI must be developed both in a responsible as well as innovative way. Otherwise, Germany and Europe would lose ground against China and the US at the beginning of a new age of progress.

The “Inhuman” Revolution – Artificial Intelligence as the Technology of Destiny for Germany and Europe

The following article shows that the objectives of the draft bill, which are being pursued with generation capital, namely the creation of foundation assets of 200 billion euros and annual distributions of 10 billion euros, are achieved without loan interest at a performance of 3.26%. If the foundation has to pay interest on the loan, the required performance increases, but the spread decreases steadily from the initial 3.26%. If the target distributions are to increase dynamically in the future, a performance of around 0.3 percentage points higher would be required as long as the federal government continues to grant loans. This performance appears to be realistically achievable in the long term. Nevertheless, its financial contribution is estimated to be low.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is widely regarded as a technology which will impact the future competitiveness of the German economy. Looking at the research productivity of German scientists and universities in AI, we find that Germany definitively belongs to the top performers in AI research globally, although the United States and China are somewhat ahead. This is not surprising taking into account the sheer size of their talent pools. Furthermore, the majority of promising AI startups are based in the United States, while Germany is clearly underrepresented in the group of excellent AI startups given Germany’s excellence in AI research. Hence, it is obviously more challenging for Germany to translate research excellence into successful entrepreneurship.

In the 2004 Eastern enlargement, free movement in the EU for citizens of the new member states applied only from the date of accession – or even later in those ‘old’ member states that used long transition periods. However, refugees from Ukraine now live and work freely throughout the EU and many Moldovans hold Romanian passports. With free movement, there would be little extra impact on labour markets; people’s legal status would be secured (current protection for Ukrainians runs out in 2025); and EU accession would become an even stronger institutional anchor for the ongoing systemic transformation of both countries.

Twenty years have passed since the largest enlargement of the European Union in history. During the eastern enlargement, 10 new member states entered the union, seven of which belonged to the former Eastern bloc. The new members have since experienced astonishing growth rates, closing the large gap between them and the rest of the EU. The GDP growth rates were consistently higher than those of the original members. Now, the EU must once again look east: the integration of the West Balkan countries would be a crucial step in the future development of the EU, not only economically, but also politically, provided the formal provisions of an accession are satisfied. A strong united Europe benefits all.
