The commemorations of the First World War in Belgium encouraged the creation of singular musical works such as <italic>Lament</italic>, <italic>Ypres</italic> or <italic>Shell Shock, a requiem of war</italic>, opera around the post-traumatic syndrome suffered by the combatants. The Berlin experimental group Einstürzende Neubauten and its frontman Blixa Bargeld designed <italic>Lament</italic> after a commission from the West Flemish government for the commemoratives in West Flanders. This album was produced in the studio, then world premiered in Dixmude on November 8, 2014. The group then toured Europe and Australia until 2018, with around 30 dates. Although this choice of a German band may seem embarrassing to some Belgian critics, the album includes a significant amount of research work and combines noise expertise with historical sound archives from the First World War. This article aims to study the contributions of the musicians, the stakes of a commissioned work and the expectations of the public.

<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>This paper aims at bringing out some of the most significant characteristics that unite and differentiate the way culture is dealt with in the Cultural Studies, <italic>Kulturwissenschaften</italic> and <italic>études culturelles</italic> and does so in the light of norm. It would be indeed unavailing to be fully exhaustive given the great plurality of all this scientific formations. It is certainly more relevant to point out how these formations respectively navigate in relation to the norm, whether in theory and practice or at the institutional level, and in so doing fulfill a crucial orientation function.</trans-abstract>

Of all the filmmakers who made up Germany's cinematic glory in the interwar period, G. W. Pabst is the one who received the least recognition or took the longest to do so. But he is also the one who, as early as the late 1920s, made the First World War a cinematic event which is reflected, more or less directly, in four of his films: <italic>The Love of Jeanne Ney</italic>, <italic>Westfront 1918</italic>, <italic>Kameradschaft</italic> and <italic>Street of Shadows</italic>. War appears as a traumatic experience that has wounded individuals, souls and peoples. But these four films also form an artistic manifesto, in which Pabst affirms the restorative power of cinema, which, in essence, consists of an incessant dialectic between cut and reunion. With its proper aesthetic means, the cinema can thus repair the after-effects of war.

Allein im französischen Mutterland gibt es mehr als 1.100 Gospelgruppen. Im transnationalen französischsprachigen Raum sind es mehr als 10.000, wobei Solisten und Kirchenchöre, die sich zu dieser Musikgattung bekennen, nicht mitgerechnet sind. Die Gospelmusik wirkt heute als verbindendes Medium. Worum geht es bei der Begegnung zwischen diesem kulturellen Angebot und einem pluralistischen Publikum innerhalb und außerhalb der Kirchen? Ausgehend von einem Forschungsfeld, das sich auf die Frankophonie konzentriert und auf eine soziohistorische Methodologie stützt (I), lässt sich die Entfaltung von drei interkulturellen Dynamiken beobachten (II). Erstens: Die Entstehung einer Identität, in der afrikanische und europäische Einflüsse auf der Grundlage einer Neuinterpretation des Erbes der Sklaverei zusammenfließen. Zweitens die Entstehung einer “restaurativen” Musik, in Analogie zu den Funktionen der von Howard Zehr konzipierten “restaurativen Gerechtigkeit”. Und schließlich die Entstehung einer Kreolisierung durch eine inklusive Musik, die dazu neigt, die Gemeinschafts-schranken zu überwinden. Dieses kulturelle Bildungsangebot wirft letztlich Fragen auf, die es zu vertiefen gilt, indem Prozesse der Spiritualisierung, Kulturalisierung und Globalisierung, die zum Vergleich einladen, untersucht werden.
Dans la seule France métropolitaine, plus de 1.100 groupes et ensembles Gospelsont été répertoriés. Dans l’espace transnational francophone, on dépasse les 10.000 structures, sans compter les solistes et chorales paroissiales qui se revendiquent de ce genre musical. La musique Gospel constitue aujourd’hui un vecteur très rassembleur. Qu’est-ce qui se joue dans la rencontre entre cette offre culturelle et des publics pluriels, dans et hors des églises ? A partir d’un terrain de recherche axé sur la francophonie, éclairé par une méthodologie sociohistorique (I), trois dynamiques interculturelles se déploient (II). Tout d’abord, la fabrique d’une identité où se rejoignent influences africaines et européennes, sur la base d’une relecture de l’héritage de l’esclavage. Ensuite, la fabrique d’une musique “restaurative”, en analogie avec les fonctions de la “justice restaurative” conceptualisée par Howard Zehr. Enfin, la fabrique d’une créolisation, via une musique inclusive qui tend à dépasser les barrières communautaires. Cette offre culturelle formatrice (Bildung) ouvre in fine sur des questions à approfondir, à partir de processus de spiritualisation, culturalisation, globalisation qui invitent au comparatisme.
In metropolitan France alone, more than 1,100 Gospel groups and choirs have been listed. In the French-speaking transnational space, there are more than 10,000 structures, without counting the soloists and parish choirs who claim to belong to this musical genre. Today’s Gospel music attracts large crowds. What is at stake in the encounter between this cultural offer and plural audiences, inside and outside the churches? From a research field centered on the French-speaking world, through a socio-historical methodology (I), three intercultural dynamics unfold (II). First of all, the creation of an identity where African and European influences come together, based on a reinterpretation of the heritage of slavery. Then, the making of “restorative” music, in analogy with the functions of “restorative justice” conceptualized by Howard Zehr. Finally, the making of a creolization, through inclusive music that tends to overcome community barriers. This formative cultural offer <italic>(Bildung)</italic> finally leads us to questions to be deepened, from processes of spiritualization, culturalization, globalization which invite comparison.

Gospel francophone, une histoire culturelle et religieuse entre Caraïbes, Europe et Afrique de l’Ouest

Die Ära der Kulturkämpfe kann als ein Schlüsselmoment in der westeuropäischen Geschichte gesehen werden, in dem die Beziehung zwischen Kultur und Religion ein zentrales Thema und Gegenstand unterschiedlicher Interpretationen war, je nach politischem Standpunkt und Land. Diese unterschiedlichen Auffassungen und Definitionen liegen den Argumenten über die Rolle des Staates bei der Erziehung der Nation in diesen Debatten zugrunde. Am Beispiel Preußens, Frankreichs und der Niederlande in den 1870/80er Jahren analysiere ich, welche Rolle dem Staat als „Ersatz“ für die Kirche in der Schule zugeschrieben wurde und welche Rolle die unterschiedlichen und oft gegensätzlichen Definitionen von Religion in der Argumentation hatten.
L’ère du <italic>Kulturkampf</italic> apparaît comme un moment historique privilégié dans l’Europe occidentale où l’articulation entre culture et religion est centrale et sujette à des interprétations très divergentes selon les forces politiques et les pays. Ces différentes conceptions et définitions constituent en même temps un enjeu majeur des débats parlementaires autour du rôle de l’Etat dans l’éducation de la nation à cette époque. A partir de l’exemple de la Prusse, de la France et des Pays Bas dans les années 1870/80, l’objet de cette contribution est d’analyser le discours de « remplacement » de l’Eglise par l’Etat dans le domaine de l’école ainsi que les enjeux qui y sont liés pour les définitions de la religion.
The <italic>Kulturkampf</italic> era can be seen as a key moment in western European history in which the relationship between culture and religion is a central theme and subject to different interpretations depending on the political actors and the country. These different representations of religion and its role in culture function as premises in arguments regarding the role of the State in national education. Using parliamentary debates in the 1870s/80s in Prussia, France and the Netherlands as case studies, I analyze the discourse on the role of the State as “replacement” for the Church in the school and the role that often contradictory definitions of religion had in the legitimation of or opposition to legislation on this topic.

Anhand des Siegerlandes in Südwestfalen wird exemplarisch verfolgt, wie der reformatorische Impuls des Priestertums aller Gläubigen seit dem 18. Jahrhundert zu einem Wettkampf um religiöse Deutungshoheiten zwischen der religiösen <italic>high culture</italic> in Gestalt von Landeskirche und Obrigkeit auf der einen Seite und verschiedenen Formen religiöser <italic>low culture</italic> auf der anderen Seite führte. Letztere verbindet trotz faktischer Rivalität auch untereinander die Betonung einer unbedingten Verbindlichkeit der Bibel in ihrem Wortlaut in Abgrenzung zur (historisch-kritischen) Theologie und einer von Theologen geleiteten Kirche. Seit dem späten 20. Jahrhundert kommt ein Trend zu fundamentalistisch-konservativen Positionen in bewusster Unterscheidung von der <italic>Mainstream Culture</italic> hinzu, die auch bei den Landeskirchen vermutet wird. Dies führt zu einer Distanzierung von der Landeskirche auch bei solchen Laiengemeinschaften, die sich ursprünglich als Teil der Kirche verstanden.
En partant de l’exemple fourni par la région du Siegerland dans le Sud de la Westphalie, on étudie comment l’impulsion réformatrice issue de l’idée de « Sacerdoce universel » a conduit depuis le XVIIIe siècle à des tensions et conflits relatifs aux questions d’autorité en matière d’interprétation religieuse. Ces tensions opposaient la <italic>high culture</italic> religieuse, représentée par l’Église provinciale <italic>(Landeskirche)</italic> et l’autorité civile, d’une part, et diverses formes de <italic>low culture</italic> religieuse, d’autre part. Point commun entre ces dernières, au-delà de la rivalité de fait entre elles, l’accent mis sur l’autorité absolue de la Bible par opposition à la théologie (historico-critique) et à une Église dirigée par des théologiens. Depuis la fin du XXe siècle, on observe en outre une tendance fondamentaliste et conservatrice se démarquant consciemment de la culture <italic>mainstream,</italic> supposée présente également au sein des Églises provinciales. Ceci conduit notamment les communautés de laïcs à prendre leur distance par rapport à ces dernières, dont elles se sentaient initialement partie intégrante.
By the example of Siegerland in South Westphalia the contribution tracks how the Reformation impulse of the priesthood of all believers caused a competition on religious interpretational regimes between religious <italic>High Culture</italic> in the shape of the Evangelical Church and the political authority on the one hand, and different varieties of religious <italic>Low Culture</italic> on the other hand since the 18th century. Besides the factual rivalry, those varieties are connected by emphasising the absolute liability of the Bible in its wording to distinguish it from the (historical-critical) theology and a church that is conducted by theologians. Since the late 20th century, there is also a trend to fundamentalistic-conservative positions in an aware distinction from the <italic>Mainstream Culture</italic> that is also presumed at the Evangelical Church. This leads to an alienation from the Evangelical Church even in case of such lay corporations, which understood themselves as a part of the church, originally.

Konkurrenz zwischen religiöser High und Low Culture im Siegerland seit dem 18. Jahrhundert

Der Artikel analysiert die öffentlichen Debatten während der Pandemie und konzentriert sich dabei auf drei Facetten der Gesundheitskrise: (i) die Kriegsmetaphorik und die Heroisierungsrituale, die in den ersten Monaten der Pandemie von der Exekutive eingesetzt wurden, (ii) die Polarisierung um die umstrittene Figur des Didier Raoult und sein Therapieprotokoll gegen das Virus, und (iii) die Geographien des Protestes, die sich im Widerstand gegen die Impfkampagne und die Einführung des Gesundheitspasses formierten. Wenngleich die öffentlichen Reaktionen auf die Pandemie sich in den meisten europäischen Ländern ähnelten, weist Frankreich bestimmte Besonderheiten auf. Diese finden sich unter anderem in der starken zentralistischen Lenkung der Pandemiebekämpfung, im Einsatz von <italic>ad-hoc</italic>-Expertenkommissionen oder in der Morphologie des Protestes. Der Aufsatz zeigt, wie die Handhabung der Pandemie in vielerlei Hinsicht die kulturellen und politischen Spezifitäten Frankreichs widerspiegelt.
Le présent article se propose d’analyser les débats publics pendant la pandémie en se concentrant sur trois facettes de la crise sanitaire : (i) la métaphore guerrière et les dispositifs d’héroïsation déployés dans les premiers mois de la pandémie par l’exécutif, (ii) la polarisation survenue autour de la figure controversée de Didier Raoult et de son protocole thérapeutique contre le virus, et (iii) les geographies des mouvements contestataires formés en opposition à la campagne de vaccination et à l’instauration du passe sanitaire. Bien que les réactions publiques à la pandémie aient été similaires dans la plupart des pays européens, la France présente certaines spécificités. Celles-ci se retrouvent notamment dans la forte centralisation de la lutte contre la pandémie, dans le recours immodéré à des commissions <italic>ad hoc</italic> d’experts ou dans la morphologie de la protestation. L’article montre comment la gestion de la pandémie reflète à bien des égards les spécificités culturelles et politiques de la France.
This article analyses the public debates during the pandemic by focusing on three facets of the health crisis: (i) the war metaphor and the devices of heroisation deployed in the first months of the pandemic by the executive, (ii) the polarisation that arose around the controversial figure of Didier Raoult and his therapeutic protocol against the virus, and (iii) the geographies of the protest movements formed in opposition to the vaccination campaign and the establishment of a health pass. Although public reactions to the pandemic were similar in most European countries, France exhibits certain specific patterns. These can be identified among others in the strong centralized response to the pandemic, in the immoderate use of <italic>ad hoc</italic> expert commissions or in the morphology of protest. The paper shows how the handling of the pandemic in many ways reflects the cultural and political idiosyncrasies of France.

The sculpture class at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences – from 1749 to 1762 under the direction of Johann F. Duncker – has received little attention from Russian scholars, even less from foreign scholars. However, this class was probably the first one in St Petersburg to offer regular training in sculpture, combined with more theoretical aspects. Its new academic system was influenced by artists who came from the West to teach there and also by the art books that were translated there. Like many elements related to foreign personalities in Russia, especially from the Germanic worlds, the historiography concerning Johann F. Duncker and the sculpture class was often neglected for ideological reasons This article will take a fresh look at this class, its teachers and students, in order to reassess their legacy in the transmission of the arts in Russia.

Two autobiographically inspired anti-war novels, <italic>Die Pflasterkästen. Ein Feldsanitätsroman</italic> (1929, tr. as <italic>The Cross Bearers,</italic> 1930) by Alexander Moritz Frey (1881–1957) and <italic>Die Katrin wird Soldat</italic>. <italic>Ein Roman aus Elsass-Lothringen</italic> (1930, tr. by Margaret L. Goldsmith as <italic>Catherine Joins Up / Katrin Becomes a Soldier</italic>, London / Boston, 1931) by Adrienne Thomas make literary capital out of the experiences of wartime medicine and nursing. Published in the Weimar Republic soon after Erich Maria Remarque's <italic>All Quiet on the Western Front,</italic> they were good enough to hold their own against this bestseller for a time. Their dust jackets and covers, often created by prestigious designers, illustrated the oblivion and memory of the works within and commented on the stories they contained.
