Abstract

Research to date on boards of directors focuses on board dynamics and on how board members work together. This paper considers boards of directors from a team perspective and whether a board of directors is a team, drawing on insights from team coaching. The paper first highlights the unique features of boards of directors. The paper applies the team diagnostic survey criteria to boards of directors as a construct to assess whether boards of directors are teams. The paper considers psychological safety, which is critical to team effectiveness, and questions whether boards operating as teams exacerbate boards’ propensity for groupthink. Viewing boards of directors from a team perspective introduces a useful human lens to understand board dynamics better and learn how boards can become more effective.

The effect of organisational culture on organisational performance: the mediating role of intrapreneurship

Abstract

The aim of this research is to examine the effect of organisational culture on organisational performance in the context of the hospitality industry in the UK. Organisational culture was studied based on the Denison model. The study was conducted based on a quantitative research method and primary data was collected, with questionnaires, from 440 employees in the hospitality industry. The study reveals that organisational culture significantly affects organisational performance. Moreover, it is found that adaptability and mission are two key elements of organisational culture that significantly affect organisational performance. Furthermore, intrapreneurship fully mediates the relationship between adaptability and organisational performance. In addition, intrapreneurship fully mediates the relationship between mission and organisational performance. Hence, managers working in the hospitality industry are required to give considerable attention to adaptability and mission as two important elements of organisational culture in order to achieve intrapreneurship, and to ultimately improve the performance of an organisation.

What is Reasonable? The Operation of ‘Reasonable Accommodation’ and ‘Disability’ Provisions Under The Employment Equality Acts 1998–2015

Abstract

Anti-discrimination legislation is a key policy measure used to improve employment outcomes for people with disabilities. Law though is not necessarily value-free and can be underpinned by various discourses notably the medical and social model of disability. This article examines the process and outcomes of legal complaints taken by employees against employers relating to reasonable accommodation provisions of the Employment Equality Acts 1998–2015. We find that legal claims can involve a medicalised inquiry process while a more social model is evident regarding accommodations provisions. Accommodations sought by employees overwhelming related to a modification of their role rather than the physical environment. The success rates for employee claimants in legal cases is relatively low but case law has developed the procedural obligations of employers in dealing with disability issues. The findings are based on an analysis of adjudicated decisions under the legislation and the views of expert practitioners.

Determinants of equity financing: a demand-side analysis of Irish indigenous technology-based firms

Abstract

Successful high-technology industries enhance productivity, competition, and consumer choice. To support their innovating activities, these firms need access to finance. Given the uncertain nature of innovation, along with the high associated cost, many firms turn to equity financing. Using novel survey data for 153 indigenous equity and 141 indigenous non-equity financed high-tech firms, we examine what determines how these firms raise equity finance (i.e., independent and corporate venture capital, business angel, government-sponsored) and non-equity finance (i.e., personal investment, family and friend investment, debt finance). We find that debt finance is negatively associated with equity financing in high-tech firms. Moreover, in our sample of high-tech firms, we find that innovating firms, export-oriented firms operating in niche markets, and firms with high levels of human capital have a greater probability of being equity financed.

Tackling uncertain future scenarios with real options: A review and research framework

Abstract

Real options are widely applied in strategic and operational decision-making, allowing for managerial flexibility in uncertain contexts. Increased scholarly interest has led to an extensive but fragmented research landscape. We aim to measure and systematize the research field quantitatively. To achieve this goal, we conduct bibliometric performance analyses and bibliographic coupling analyses with an in-depth content review. The results of the performance analyses show an increasing interest in real options since the beginning of the 2000s and identify the most influential journals and authors. The science mappings reveal six and seven research clusters over the last two decades. Based on an in-depth analysis of their themes, we develop a research framework comprising antecedents, application areas, internal and external contingencies, and uncertainty resolution through real option valuation or reasoning. We identify several gaps in that framework, which we propose to tackle in future research.
