Zusammenfassung

Abstract

The studies presented in this paper deal with traffic control in case of missing data and/or when the loop detectors are faulty. We show that the traffic state estimation plays an important role in traffic prediction and control. Two approaches are presented for the estimation of the main traffic variables (traffic density and mean speed). The state constructors obtained are then used for traffic flow control. Several numerical simulations show very promising results for both traffic state estimation and control.

Public Transport Priority for Multimodal Urban Traffic Control

Zusammenfassung

Abstract

In order to improve the travel time of surface public transport vehicles (bus, tramway, etc.), several cities use Urban Traffic Control (UTC) systems enabling to give priority to public transport. This paper reviews these systems. Further on after a debate on their insufficiencies in the global regulation of the urban traffic on a whole network, the paper proposes intermodal regulation strategies, operating on intersection traffic lights to regulate the traffic, favouring the public transport. All these strategies are based on the Linear Quadratic (LQ) optimal control theory, but they are different in their ways of taking into account the public transport in the optimization problem. The simulation tests are carried out in a network of eight intersections and two public transport lines.

Bi-Level Optimization in a Transport Network

Abstract

This paper applies a bi-level formalism for the optimal control of an urban transportation network. The well known store-and-forward model in traffic control is utilized in order to increase the control space of the optimization problem. Mainly, the store-and-forward models apply the split as a control argument, assuming the traffic light cycle as a constant parameter. The paper shows that by using a bi-level formalism the control problem can be defined within increased control space comprising both the split and the cycle. Both are found as optimal solutions of a bi-level optimization problem.

Framework for an Autonomic Transport System in Smart Cities

Abstract

Today the concept of smart cities is discussed in scientific society and politics. A core function of smart cities is transportation. This paper gives a short overview on the concepts for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for smart cities and proposes a framework for the design of an autonomic transportation system that provides personalized mobility services to its users in a smart city setting. The transportation poses extreme environment for ICT systems due to fast moving vehicles and users, requiring real-time acquisition and high performance processing of large scale data, and rapidly changing communication networks topologies and node densities. The aim of this paper is to propose a framework that will act as a reference for the design of future transportation systems that are able to cope with the ever rising system complexities and users’ demands. Therefore, a backbone system providing information at different levels was designed following the principles of a corporative ICT that were proposed in [1]. The framework fulfills the main requirement providing suitable information about the local decision engines in vehicles and infrastructure interacting in smart cities traffic systems.

Speed Profile Prediction in Intelligent Transport Systems Exemplified by Vehicle to Vehicle Interactions

Abstract

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) fall in the framework of cyberphysical systems due to the interaction between physical systems (vehicles) and distributed information acquisition and dissemination infrastructure. With the accelerated development of wireless Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to Infrastructure (V2I) communications, the integrated acquiring and processing of information is becoming feasible at an increasingly large scale. Accurate prediction of the traffic information in real time, such as the speed, flow, density has important applications in many areas of Intelligent Transport systems. It is a challenging problem due to the dynamic changes of the traffic states caused by many uncertain factors along a travelling route. In this paper we present a V2V based Speed Profile Prediction approach (V2VSPP) that was developed using neural network learning to predict the speed of selected agents based on the received signal strength values of communications between pairs of vehicles. The V2VSPP was trained and evaluated by using traffic data provided by the Australian Centre for Field Robotics. It contains vehicle state information, vehicle-to-vehicle communications and road maps with high temporal resolution for large numbers of interacting vehicles over a long time period. The experimental results show that the proposed approach (V2VSPP) has the capability of providing accurate predictions of speed profiles in multi-vehicle trajectories setup.

Paradox Phenomena in Autonomously Self-Adapting Navigation

Abstract

The online routing game model can be used to measure and prove the benefits of online real time data in road traffic navigation systems. A few properties of the routing strategies are already proved. In this paper we point out that there are some paradoxes like phenomena behind these proofs, similarly as in the Braess network.

Ramp Metering Control Based on the Q-Learning Algorithm

Abstract

Modern urban highways are under the influence of increased traffic demand and cannot fulfill the desired level of service anymore. In most of the cases there is no space available for any infrastructure building. Solutions from the domain of intelligent transport systems are used, such as ramp metering. To cope with the significant daily changes of the traffic demand, various approaches with autonomic properties like self-learning are applied for ramp metering. One of these approaches is reinforced learning. In this paper the Q-Learning algorithm is applied to learn the local ramp metering control law in a simulation environment, implemented in a VISSIM microscopic simulator. The approach proposed is tested in simulations with emphasis on the mainstream speed and travel time, using a typical on-ramp configuration.

Traffic Flow Control in the Class of Distributed Parameters Systems

Abstract

In this paper a new structure and a method are suggested for the design of a control system with a distributed parameters plant. The discussed system with distributed spatial dimensions substantially differs from the control systems with concentrated parameters plants, because in it the task of the plant spatial transition of the controlled distributed variables is structurally solved. The solution of this task is based on the usage of models and filters, included in its structure and an algorithm, through which the system has real capability for distributed plants control with the desired quality. In the paper a fractal predictive system with approximated dimensions of the spatial distribution for control of the transport traffic density in highways is designed for a particular numerical example. The system model is simulated. The characteristics of the designed system are illustrated and analyzed.

The Smart Travel Planner concept for an optimal travel choice, supported by a Personalized Internet Portal, has to promote the sustainable urban mobility. STP is an important tool for Sustainable Urban Transport Decalogue’s implementation that is intended to result in lower emissions, better health and lower investment costs in the road infrastructure. The questionnaires included are for checking its public acceptance in the city and at end users’ level.

Abstract

The study is dedicated to High Level Architecture (HLA) standard for software architecture of interoperable distributed simulations. The paper discusses the differences between object-oriented programming and HLA. It presents an extended simulation architecture providing a mechanism for HLA data exchange through Object-Oriented (OO) objects. This eliminates the complex network programming for HLA distributed simulations. The paper shows a sample code that implements the architecture for OO HLA/RTI simulation.

Abstract

In recent years urban traffic safety has become a widely concerned issue due to the increasing traffic accidents caused by the growth of private car ownership. A very promising method is to provide high precision navigation service to prevent accidents. Therefore, a Network BDS/RTK System Based on Vehicular Networks (NBRSBVNs) is proposed for high precision positioning in an urban complex traffic environment in this paper. This system considers comprehensively the characteristics of the vehicular network and network RTK techniques, and also provides a new distribution method of high precision differential correction information. According to the massive field tests, this system scheme can support real-time and online high precision navigation service of multiple users at the same time. It has important practical significance in applications for vehicles active safety in a complex urban environment.

Therefore, a Network BDS/RTK System Based on Vehicular Networks (NBRSBVNs) is proposed for high precision positioning in an urban complex traffic environment in this paper. This system considers comprehensively the characteristics of the vehicular network and network RTK techniques, and also provides a new distribution method of high precision differential correction information. According to the massive field tests, this system scheme can support real-time and online high precision navigation service of multiple users at the same time. It has important practical significance in applications for vehicles active safety in a complex urban environment.
